Advice please:

Chim was rear-ended at low speed a fortnight ago, the other driver's insurance have admitted liability and are to pay for the repair. Car is Rosso Pearl which has faded over the years so repair costs include a full respray, but insurer is only going to pay for what is visible and is refusing to pay for the shut lines, under bonnet etc.

Couple of questions, bearing in mind I am aware that I am getting a respray for nothing, and yes, I am grateful:
Will not having the shut lines done (c£1000 with labour and VAT) matter or significantly reduce the value of the car?
Is it unreasonable to expect an insurer to pay for this?
Should I just pay the grand and be happy?

Any (pref sensible ) comments and suggestions welcome.

Hi Matt
Personally I would pay the extra,It will be worth it,you will only regret it everytime you open the door or bonnet.Does seem a lot extra for the shuts though, depends how thorough they are I suppose.
I think you are quite lucky to get them to pay for a respray after all it is not their fault the paint cannot be matched.
Just my opinion.
What colour will you be going for?

Pete (the paint)

Thanks Pete. Will be going for the same colour, but you're right, if I don't do it I'll regret it every time I open the door. Cost is a rough guess based on the agreed repair cost and the original quote, so may not be quite as much as a grand.

I'd be surprised if it was as much as a grand, but then they will be removing doors, boot and bonnet to do it properly. Won't they?

I'd go for it - perfect time to have it done.

Mine was tagged by a numpty last year and needed the front wing, bonnet, drivers door blending in to make the job a goodun. I bit the bullet and paid the extra for the whole respray - and so glad it did yes

I sympathise, my Griff is at TVR Power following a similar incident. Current plan is a rear end respray so I'll have to wait and see on the colour match issue. I have every confidence in TVR Power though.

Do your insurers have anything to say about the third party's refusal to do a proper job?

I just wanted to say make sure that your repairer knows what they are doing (GRP and all that) or you could be storing up trouble for later.

Very true - I've made sure the repairer was may choice and not the insurers, and I obtained a quotation to make sure everything is included to do a proper job. My original question was based on what you say - is what they're offering to pay for a proper job or should they be stumping up for the full respray, shut lines and all?

They should stump up for a full respray - it's not your fault after all so why should you be out of pocket.
I'd get the claim sorted and change insurers at renewal.

This was my initial reaction, but wanted to test the water to see whether I was being greedy or unreasonable.....

Here, here.

Mines just gone to Austec following some Numpty reversing into me. Mines Rosso Pearl too. Spoke to Austec today as the Assessor had been in. They are pushing for the full respray. Will need to wait to see what happens. Ironic really as I only had it done 3 months ago following a knock on the door by a third party who buggered off. Had to make that claim on my own insurance. They paid out in full - £3500 no problems.

Anyway, I've told Austec that I'm only interested in getting it back as "it was" before the accident. I currently have left it in the hands of the 3rd parties insurers, however I will threaten/get my insurer or a 3rd party "fallen into a bush at work.... you're entitled to compensation" type company involved if need be if they try and wriggle out of doing it right.

So stand your ground.

Also..... After taking some advice, I was told that I was due a loan vehicle "like for like". After some negotiations with the 3rd party insurer, I agreed to the Astra diesel they wanted me to have (yes I know!) but have been given cash compensation as well. I've also negotiated further that the amount of compensation currently given will only cover 2 weeks. Beyond that, I will require more compensation.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Matt, Richard might be able to give you some idea of the shut line costs, I know he paid extra when his car had full respray at the same place after the garage door fell on his car

Thanks Andy. Jon at Ewelme has given me a good deal on the extras, so I'll whine to the insurer just for good measure, but will get the work done. Now I need to sort the carpets - will quiz you again on Thursday about this!
