I have just been to Costco and they are selling Mobil 1 0/40 for £25.00 for 5 ltrs, and 5ltrs of wonder wheels with brush for £9.99. This was at the Watford Branch dont know if the offer is country wide though.

It is recomended not to use 0/40 but 15/50 as 0/40 is to thin, and can cause premature cam wear. I use 15/50 Mobile motorsport.

Been warned that wonder wheels is a no no with split rims.

Wonder wheels is quite aggressive and should be used sparingly whatever the wheel.

Agree on the split rims as it gets under the bolt edges and lifts the laquer!

Use a less harsh solution, ideally just some carwash and a sponge used regularly.

I understand a few Wedge lads had it damage the seals between the rims and leaks developing was the result.

But I have used it on ordinary wheels that were stinking and a superb result.

For god sake what ever you do dont use wonder wheels its hydrochloric acid based, tvr wheels are more prone than most to aggresive treatments and this is probably the most aggresive you can get.

The mobil 1's ok tho

The 0/40 refers to the viscosity at different temp ranges from memory.

the 0/40 is supposed to be more fluid on start up to prevent damage in this maximum wear moment

thumbup Yes I agree, used to run 0/40 and then 5/50 and after a thrashing (track day or sprint on a hot day) oil pressure used to drop right off to seriously low levels. Now I use 15/50 Mobil 1 Motorsport and I can definitely recommend it smokin

i agree with that man! I used it too many times on my BMW MV-Spoke 18" aloys, and boy does it make cleaning those b*stards easier...... but when I took my rims off to give them a real thorough clean, you shudda seen the corrosion on the inside, where you don't get it cleaned off properly - they're a mess and need a full refurb.

Advice given to me? Get your wheels spotless, and then give them a good couple of coats of a simple silicon wax - wash in luke warm soapy (not detgergent) water every week, and the brake dust should simply fall off. Similar to the paintowrk really - prevention rather than cure.

Hope this helps.

I use wonder wheels, and yes, it's certainly pretty lethal, but I use a 50/50 mix with water, and it still does the job.

I have been using Wonder wheels and haven't had any problems with it, but the bottle must be about 6 years old by now, have they changed it?

What would other people recommend to use to clean the wheels?

Yep, wonder wheels did for the 19" split rims I had on a BMW, I find Muc-off very good, its effective and not as corosive, I buy it from the local mountain bike shop and have bought some from a tyre center that did a lot of alloys wheels. Also comes in big bottle so goes a long way. Using Autoglym Wheel Seal after makes cleaning much easier next time as it stops the braek dust sticking.

Excellent thanks for that. I have run out of wonder wheels so I will give this a try. I normally wax the wheels anyway after I have cleaned them, but think I will try the wheel seal this time.

the Zymol wheel cleaner is excellent. i think it's made from all natural products, but is probably a bit pricey. i bought mine years ago and now use our local Polish crew to get the cars clean.
