I've got a friend who has never owned a TVR before but has always promised himself one. It would be a daily driver and be used on a mixture of motorways and fast A-roads, with probably a few traffic jams thrown in for good measure. He has asked me what would be the most suitable model for him.

Even though I use my Tamora almost everyday, I don't really think it would be for him - the ride is probably a bit too harsh, plus it leaks like a good 'un.

So I suggested an AJP8 Cerb (being a bit more practical too). Just wondered if anyone had any comments about this or alternative suggestions. I don't want him to get stung, because I reckon the more people we can get into TVR ownership the better thumbup

I suspect the Chim was the most popular TVR ever for a reason, and part of that I'm sure was it's "accessibility". Loads of 'em used as daily drivers.

I'll second that John.
My first TVR was a 4ltr Chimp and i drove it every day, it lived outside and was not problem in the 3 half years i had it,
A big bundle of fun and for low cost running too.
I now have a Cerby, but would not recommend one as a fist TVR buy.

I used to use my Chimaera everyday which was really good. Wouldn't wanna use my Cerb everyday though - its too mental & expensive.

I would say Chimaera would be great choice too. Also agree, whilst gorgeous - probably not a Cerbera.

Don't agree.
The Chim is an old TVR and doesn't have the handling or the progressive throttle control of later models.
Unless you have tried a Tamora or a T350 or a Tuscan 2 or a Saggy you don't know what you are missing.

A T350 or Tamora.
I wouldnt wanna use a cerb everyday. It is one of TVRs least suitable cars for that purpose.

If you can eliminate the "Speed Six Fear", my vote is for the Cerbera S6.

A great car and a bargain at the moment too.

I wish I could afford to run the Cerb as a daily driver. Boy I'd arrive everywhere happy although I suppose I would be without a licence after a week.

True BossC. A S6 Cerb can be had for such little money. Then shove a few K to one side for a rainy day and then enjoy.

Absolutely, my 4L has got me to and from work for the last 41/2 years through all that cr@p London traffic- as a commuter ride.

At weekends though, she reverts to the beast bornevil

yes funnily enough thats what I'd have said. Did a back to back between a 4.5 V8 and a S6 Cerb once, driving the Speed6 was more like our Mondeo of the time, such a smooth progressive engine compared to the racous V8, if you drove them in a blind test you'd think they were from different manufacturers.

Not that that swung it for me, as it was V8 all the way But having tried, and failed to use V8 Cerb as a daily driver (and weekend kiddy transporter) I wouldn't recommend it unless you are prepared to make many compromises and put up with the costs. Driving around London and through jams is a pain, especially if your clutch is near the end of its life, and while blipping the throttle can keep you sane, after a long day when its lashing down with rain it might make up for misserable drive home.

I'd go along with the 4.0 Chimaera which he could use daily some of the time, then something more sensible for those winter days, breakdowns or when parking somewhere you'd not want to leave the Tiv.

having had all options (RV8, AJP8 and SP6) over the years, the SP6 is the one i'd describe as being closest to a 'daily driver'. don't get me wrong, when the traffic is moving or on the open road, the other 2 are fantastic, but in traffic i find myself much fresher stepping out of the tamora.
