So who owns Morgan ? Surely they have made more cars than TVR in recent years ? I know they use BMW powerplants but didn't think they were owned by the Munich propellor company.

Any ideas ?

Morgan is the world's oldest car company in private hands, headed by the grandson of the founder (HFS.Morgan) Charles Morgan, and currently has around 160 employees, with an order book stretching well into 2007.

If ever you get the chance, and find yourself near Malvern Link, (near Worcester) pay them a visit, you will be very welcome....

Morgan used to make c500 cars per year IIRC. TVR generally made a lot more than that but last year and 2005 less for sure.

Umm.... The original questioner asked if TVR is the biggest etc.. not if it had been in the mists of time.

what costitutes the biggest?

vehicles produced in the last 12 months?
size of factory?
number of employees?
total number of vehicles produced ever?

what constitutes british?

british based?
british owned?
full, or part british made? (ie, morgan with its bmw crate engines).

im not meaning to be pedantic, just looking for your point of view.

LOL. Good point.

I would suggest - British based and at least assembled here. An entity in its own right (not a subsid of another bigger car maker i.e. Aston / Ford) and total registrations in the last 12 month period as reported by the SMMT. (Although I think TVR and Morgan are lumped together under "other British" ).

Britain's != British

I vote for Jaguar as Britain's largest independent sports carmaker of all times, and Morgan as the current.

It's a vote, a suggestion. After BL, Jaguar has been independent from 1984 to 1989 before bought by Ford. Do you have a suggestion for a bigger independent British car manufacturer? More output of cars or more employees than Jaguar in its independent zenith?

Exactly. I was questioning the accuracy of the BBC News website - which I don't often think gets its details wrong, though maybe in this case if Morgan is still independant.

TVR seem to have made very few cars this year compared to Morgan with its multi-year waiting list. Perhaps the Beeb need a new copy of "The Boys Big Book of Cars" ........

I think in fairness it was true up to 2005.

I'm not so sure Morgan have such a long waiting list now. I think if you want one you can get one pretty quickly...

I waited seven months for mine, but if you are not too choosy about specification you can probably pick oe up from stock from a dealer if you are prepared to travel. The car took three weeks to complete from start to finish.....

When I had a plus 8 in 1978 there was an eight year waiting list at that time......
