Some advice please
Discussion
Had new rear Brake Discs, Pads and Braided Hoses fitted recently at Automeden. I am not sure what brake fluid was used when carrying out the work, and the warning light has been on for the pat 3 days as the levels are low. Can anyone advise if I should use the same, or if not, recommend the best type to top up with. The brakes are standard.
I have tried contacting Automeden but THERE IS NO ANSWER. They must still be drunk after the Christmas festivitiess

Hope all had a good Christmas and all the best for the New Year

before you evev think about topping up carefully inspect to see where old fluid has gone and repair before driving!!!!!!!!. leaking brakes are not the same as leaking radiators.
Cheers guys for the quick response.
There is fluid in the reservoir, it has just dropped below the full level. I thought that this may have been normal due to having the work done recently, and things settling down. I will top up with the Dot 4 as recommended and then keep a close eye on things.
If there was a leak would I not feel this when braking.
Cheers
The best advice I can give is heed the advice you have already been given. Fluid leaking out of brakes is extremely dangerous. I find it hard to believe you have been driving around for 3 days with the warning light on but even harder to believe is you ask for advice and ignore it. When fluid leaks out air usually leaks in and air in the system will eventually lead to loss of brakes so yes you will feel it when braking but that will be too late. Have them checked by someone before driving anywhere!!!!!!!!!!!
I have had this with new brakes myself and keep a very close watch on fluid levels.
Sometimes the level only had to move slightly for the low fluid sensor to activate, but please be careful. Check it everytime you drive it initially until you are sure it is not losing fluid. If it is dropping fluid DO NOT DRIVE IT.

As steve said and he knows what he is talking about, get it checked, dont drive it untill you are 100% sure its not got a leak !!

Why is it every time you ask for advice on this forum, and others for that matter, you get treated like a F*****g retard.
Firstly... I didn't say that I had been driving around for 3 days with the warning light on...I said that it came on 3 days ago and I haven't been able to contact anyone regarding the matter. Its Christmas!!!
I also stated that the level was just below the full mark and it probably needed topping up - Hence, what fluid to use!!
From your response I take it that if the levels drop slightly, the fluid must be P*****g out from the brakes and I'm bound to die... if the reservior doesn't need topping up from time to time why do they sell little bottles of fluid...or does that question also demand a response as if I was a retard!!
The level was slightly low, the light was flashing on and off 3 days ago. I wanted to top up the reservior before I went out in the car, so I asked for advice to what fluid to use. If this may be a matter of life and death, thanks for the advice. But is there any need to treat people like reving idiots!!!!
Happy Christmas

Stuart I had the misfortune to read you reply before you edited it. I can not understand why you were so abusive towards someone who merely replied honestly to your request for advice. My advice was based merely on knowledge and experience and I am quite happy to withdraw it. The initial advice not to drive the car came from Bugattiqueen but I saw no tirade of abuse towards her so I can only assume it was personal for some reason. To my knowledge I do not know you but if I have given you bad advice in the past please discuss it with me, public verbal attacks acheive nothing. We do not visit these websites for financial gain but to help each other and share knowledge and experience, I am quite happy to stop wasting my time if all I get is abuse.. sTeVeR

sTeVeR...(Lost me there??) maybe theres something you are trying to let me know?
If you respond to people like they are total idiots, as per the quote above, prepare to take some abuse. The above quote is based purely on assumptions... you assumed I had driven around for 3 days with the warning light on. you assumed that I would ask for advice and ignore it, and you assumed I would drive around with the warning light on and the brake fluid leaking everywhere in the first place. I can only assume, that you assumed, I was a complete idiot..if you know what I mean, and Only the wife can claim that!!
The truth is that the car hasn't moved off the drive since the warning light came on. The moral of the story is, ask the question, then make judgements.
I am willing to take advice from anybody and I am more than willing to ask for help. But if this is the kind of response you get from asking questions on the forum, I won't bother in future.
By the way. Not sure what you mean by the abuse you saw before I edited the first post. I only changed some spelling mistakes, but didn't like to say because I had just spouted on about not being an idiot!!
Have a nice day
Hi Guys
Please dont take this as not taking advice or not listening. But is it possible that the brake fluid just needs topping up.
I had the brakes done around 5 Months ago and the level has dropped very slightly over that time to just below the full level. Can this be due to natural loss of fluid or should the fluid level not drop, even over this time. I will get the brakes checked - always intended to - but was just wondering why nobody thinks this could just be normal fluid loss.
Cheers

Errm... actually levels do drop as pads/rotors wear and caliper pistons move out. It is possible (but unlikely in my view) that bedding the pads in has resulted in the fluid level dropping perceptably. If, say, the level was not topped when the car was handed over, it 'could' have dropped enough to trip the sender if the pads were especially unevenly faced (or soft). I don't think that's the likeliest case by any means (and the car should never have been handed back like that); I'd certainly want to eliminate leakage. Hope you find a discernable cause... don't like 'mysteries', especially with brakes.
