Just thought I’d post my experience of a recent visit to Fernhurst TVR. I’ve wanted a TVR for years, and have been an avid reader of the Pistonheads TVR forums for several of them. Having set my heart on a Chimera, I’m now approaching the time when I can look at buying one. Words on a screen can only tell you so much so I decided that it was time to go and have a look at a few, and seeing as the village of Fernhurst is only down the road from me, it seemed the best option.

I phone prior to visiting and spoke to Nick who was extremely friendly from the word go. I took the Mrs down, who, 3 months ago, couldn’t see what all the fuss with TVR’s was about… 3 months later and upon hearing one start up, I think she’s been transformed!

Anyway, upon arrival, we had a look around the cars on the forecourt and after a few minutes, Nick came out to greet us. In my history of looking at cars, I can quite honestly say I’ve never met anyone more helpful or friendly, without being pushy in the slightest. Nothing seemed too much trouble and although I’d done my research, he explained a few things about the Chimera’s that I hadn’t realised beforehand.

He took us around their workshop and we had a look over a few cars. Now originally I’d been looking at the 4 litre, but then possible the best part of the day came – we went out in a 450. I was expecting him to take me for a short blast but one minute down the road, he stopped the car, got out and handed me the keys. Took it for a good drive with the roof off, sun shining and that ever expected grin appeared on my face. Now I knew I wanted one but having driven one has really convinced me that I do. Every worry of all the horror stories you hear on the forums was dispelled by the kick in the back from the acceleration, oh, and that noise…

So yeah, I’m still looking, the purchase is looming ever closer, but just wanted to say if anyone is thinking of getting one, I can’t recommend Fernhurst enough.

I bought both my Chim and the Tuscan I have now from Fernies, great people, Nick, Drew, Simon, Graham and Bryan - all very, very enthusiastic, helpful, knowledgeable and decent chaps! Haven't used them for servicing, as yet, as plan to take advantage of being literally round the corner from Racing Green...

Ditto all the above.
Brought a Griff from them last saturday, first time i had been to them, and it was a real pleasure dealing with them.
I shall certainly be highly recommending them.
Pick it up on saturday bounce bounce

Just bought my Chimaera 500 from them last Saturday, the car was very well prepared and looked stunning when i came to collect. Fantastic bunch of guys with a great attitude and a pleasure doing business with them. The only fault i found but this would apply to all dealers is there low p/x values, i turned there offer down on my 400 Chimaera and sold my car through P/H and got an extra 2k. I would not hesitate to recommend them and will use them again in the future if i need to. clapclapclap

Did you guys pay the premium for the 'prepared' cars or go my (the poor man's) route?

Haha, i'll probably be going the poor man's route, as i'm poor, or at least will be upon buying. I'm stretching myself to get a Trevor but I can afford it if i'm sensible, so poor man's route here I come!

Further to someone's thread reply that we british are bad at giving credit when due,i thought i would add my agreement as to Fernhurst's good reputation.

I have not purchased anything from them but whenever i have had a need for advice (as they are closer than my indie garage for servicing/upgrades) i have picked up the phone or driven there. I have always found the people straightforward and professional and cannot praise them highly enough (even when they are not making money from the conversation)

No went the poor mans route, but when i said my new 500 was well prepared it was not upto the standards of the cars in the showroom, but it was prepared beyond my expectations. It was stored downstairs cleaned and polished, engine cleaned, chassis wax oiled, brake calipers cleaned and painted, stone chips and a small mark on the door painted, new MOT, tax, 4 new tyres, (which i asked for in the deal)and half a tank of fuel. So all in all i was very very happy especially on the drive home.

AS this was my first Chim, and i was concerned about (the ill-founded) poor reliability reputation, i went for the fully prepared option. I considered the premium a fair price to pay for "peace of mind".

If i was in the market again, which i'm not cos i lurrrrrve it, i would definately go the same route again. thumbup

It's all about the £'s for me. Also, it will be my daily driver, so (and yes, i'm ashamed to say this word) practicality comes into it too. I never knew why Griff's were so much more than Chim's, but I was reliably infomed by Nick, pointing to the Griff 500 in their showrrom and muttering the word '3000' and then pointing to the Chim and saying '9000' - referring to production numbers, I can now see why.
