Hi Guys,

I have a '96 Chimaera 400HC - great car. Just took it to Maranello to dispell the TVR reliability reputation and it was fantastic - didn't miss a beat in 2000miles over 4 days driving - cool.

However, I now have a small glitch which shows itself after driving for a while, around the passenger door lock. A switch or relay clicks on and off sometimes slowly, sometimes rapidly and the door lock is not able to engage (on the knob on the tunnel). Does anyone have a clue what's causing this? At the moment it means I have to drive soft top always or I go mental with the noise - no hardship at the moment though :-). My problem is I don't want to undo something I may never get back on!!

Any help, massively appreciated.

It could be the doow switch not being pressed properly when the door is shut, aparently there are sometimes pads on the end that can fall off.

Hi,

It may just be the switch on the door.

If you open the door and look down to the rear corner there should be a black platic tab which engages with a simple push switch on the bodywork.

The tab often wears through or falls out and then the push switch which is envolved in the central locking mechanism doesn't work properly.

When mine went any slight bump would unlock the doors.

Don't know if this is what you were alluding too or whether I have missed the point completely.

OK, both seem to lead me to the door switch - brilliant thanks. The bible doesn't seem to give any details of this part of the car - where can I see the switch itself and if I need a replacement are they generic part from somewhere?

The switch is just a block nub sticking out where the bottom corner of the back of the door meets the bodywork. There shouldn't be a fault there. If it is this problem then the fault will lie on the door where the tab that allows the switch to be pushed in when the door closes has worn out or fallen off.

All that is required is a bit of plastic and a drop of superglue.

I now think I understand. Is the grey push button something to do with the door lock? I thought it was the interior light switch! It looks intact and clicks when I press it in. Why should the push button influence the locking system? I knew I should have done engineering at school. So am I right in thinking the mechanical piece that holds the door shut has nothing to do with the 'electrical' issue?

Honestly don't know, but that push switch is for the central locking not the lights.

As for need a degree in engineering, 'chaos theory' would be more suitable for working on TVR electrics.

Bingo, you are bang on. The black stud has broken off and so the 'nub' is not depressing completely. Fantastic - many many thanks - I had no idea. Out with the superglue.

Cheers and have a great weekend. T.

Glad it was that simple.

It was pointed out to me here last year when I was being driven mad by the constant popping of the central locking everywhere I went.

Enjoy the weekend as well.
