Not a TVR but you might be able to help
Discussion
Chaps,
I know it's not a TVR but it's worth asking the question, does anyone know of a decent body shop in Gloucestershire/Wiltshire or that sort of area?
Sadly my father passed away on Tuesday after a 3 year battle with cancer and has left me his Twin Plenum Rover SD1 Vitesse. He's had it from new and took it off the road about 4 years ago to give it a complete restoration, sadly the cancer took hold before he could really begin.
It's in very poor condition after 4 years of standing and the body needs loads of work (wings, sills etc) - I'm in no mad rush to get it done, I'd ideally like to find a place that will take it and fit it in between jobs to keep the cost down. Does anyone know of anywhere?
Many thanks for your help,
Max

Very sad to hear about your father, he had great taste in cars
Have you thought about contacting an owners club?

Hi Joo,
Thank you for you kind words, Dad loved his cars and had all manner of interesting motors over the years including a very modified Lotus Elan that was timed at Mira to hit 60 in just over 4 seconds.
Good idea, I'll see if I can contact someone from the club to get some names.
On a TVR note, been trying to contact you last week re 4.2/4.5 intakes, is the mobile on your site still the best number to get you on?
Cheers,
Max

Just picked up your thread and very sorry to hear about your father. Sound like he had great taste in cars the SD1 Vitesse was always one of my favourites.
Sort of know how your feeling lost my dad six weeks ago from skin cancer still sinking in.
Wish you all the best of luck in your search if you can’t find some one give me a call know someone that is first class but is out of your area.
He has a very good rep for restoring Hillman Avenger, Talbot Lotus, MGB Gts and TVRs. He’s good at working with GRP and Metal and his pricing is very reasonable
All the best.

Chaps,
I’m really touched by all of your kind words, Dad would have really appreciated it.
Dad was a very committed petrol head, he was the one that got me interested in all things mechanical and then later encouraged me to do a degree in engineering. His knowledge on all things petrol (and diesel) powered was truly vast and it’s just starting to sink in that I’ll no longer be able to call him or ask for advice.
We undertook all manner of projects from the rebuilding of a David Brown 990 tractor that hadn’t moved for 20 years to messing around with various Lotus’s (Esprits and Elans) and everything in between. He was lucky enough to come from a generation that produced some amazing cars and he was a fanatical racer in his youth. Dad drove some incredible cars such as genuine GT40’s, Maseratis, Gull Wing Mercedes, Lister Jaguars, owned some great bits of kit, D types, E types, Bentleys, MG’s, Lotuses, Lotus Cortina, Triumphs, Porches, Cosworths, Alfas and many more.
A couple of weeks ago I took the Cerbera for him to see for the first time, sadly he was robbed of his sight only hours before I arrived as the tumour spread further into him and never got to see what I was so excited about.
I did ask him what his favourite automotive memories were and what he treasured most from his years behind the wheel. His favourite memory was a Morris Minor he’d fitted with a B series engine from an MGB GT. He mounted a spark plug into the exhaust and would pull the choke out and set a massive flame going from the back. It also had a ‘trap door’ instead of a passenger floor where he’d deploy cans tied together with string to rattle under any car that followed him too closely.
His favourite drivers car of all time was the normally aspirated Porsche 944, just perfect he said.
The only car he never wanted to sell was his Twin Plenum Vitesse, he’d had it from new and really loved it – as he became more and more ill he’d often talk about its restoration to keep his spirits up. I’d like to complete it for him, he checked the serial numbers a few years ago and said that it was one of the very, very last to be made. Many of my favourite childhood memories are sitting in the passenger seat whilst Dad (a very gifted driver, much better than I’ll ever be) hooned around, loving every minute of that V8 sound track and my mates envious glances.

Some pictures of the old girl I took yesterday, not a pretty sight at all. I'd wanted to do something with it for a long time and before the serious rot set in, sadly it'll require a lot more work now. The hope of being able to work on it was very important to Dad though, so as much as I wanted to get stuck in I couldn't do it without him - without hope we are nothing.
The correct Vitesse wheels and deep chin spoiler were taken off for protection years ago, still safe and sound in the barn where dad left them. I can't believe how far the car has deteriorated, very sad. The other car was bought for spares as at the time of lay-up its panels were good, now only good for the scrap man.
