I noticed at the weekend that my oil level was fairly low. Had a look round for Mobil 1 and, as you probably know, the choice is now ''standard'' 0-40 or ''motorsport'' 15-50.
I don''t really know what the numbers mean, but I''m told the motorsport stuff is thicker. Are there any disavantages to using an oil that starts at 15? (if you know what I mean!)
One other thing, is it safe to top-up the oil that''s in there at the moment? I assume it is the old Mobil 1 (having been serviced by a dealer), but I''m not sure.
Any advice gratefully received (the car is a 96 4.0 Chimp, 46K miles)
the main thing to be aware of is what type of oil you are using, 'synthetic' or 'mineral', don't mix them. other wise top up with whatever grade you like. I won't go any further as it gets a bit involved but 0/40 is very light and unless you do very short journeys where the engine doesn't get hot stay clear of it. A good clue is when you get black sooty deposits on the back of the car, this means you are using an oil that is too light, your consumption will also be high

I have just bought some more Mobil 1 of the 0/40 variety. I didn't know they did anything else?
I have difficulty getting it and can only get it by ordering from my local factors at £29 per 5litre can!!
Can I get more variety and better price elsewhere - eg. by ordering from the web?
thanks

How often or after what mileage do you guys top up on oil?
quote:Yes because with less oil it will run slightly hotter and hence thinner and at less pressure.
Does the amount of oil have an effect on the oil pressure guage reading? Mine is generally around the 30-35 mark on low revs.
