After reading about TVR and telly adverts a couple of days ago (the pirelli film thread)

It got me wondering about TVR adverts

Yesterday I was browsing around Racing Green TVR and saw their Sagaris video.....any edited down version of that would be an excellent advert for the old Roger Melly

For those who havent seen it

Sorry but that Racing Green vid is cr@p. I was underwhelmed with it when I first saw it and Ive only got more underwhelmed over time with it. If I was trying to attract 911 buyers and the non hardcore sportscar buyers, I wouldnt be using that. The Pirelli film yes, the Racing Green one, no. For one thing the Sagaris sounds naff in their vid, its suffers from Tamora syndrome. Another thing wrong is the colour, it pretty closely resembles the Jag colour from F1 and the first reaction from a non hardcore pistonheader is going to be "Oh, it looks like the British green ones that were cr@p in F1, is it made by them?" The take it or leave it crowd have forgotten it was Jags, they just remember the colour. Remember, Moleskins is trying to attract the NON-ph crowd, the casual 911 buyer, the mob who bought Griffs and Chimps 10yrs back.

You want to highlight a Sag, the Pirelli angle is a good one. Dark looks, use a lot of frontal shots, go for the Satanic angle. The car is bad, evil and an antithesis of modern Nanny State Blair Britain. The best way to highlight a Sagaris on an aural level, is a static camera and mike just off the road, a pan view across open countryside/moorland with a winding road and a hill. Have a Sagaris fully warmed up and being given maximum attack from a mile away and approaching at speed. For 30secs or so you never see the car, you only hear screaming top end revs, all 6k work and the final scene is a full front shot of the Sagaris ripping over the brow of the hill and stop it there. Even better if you can get it wheels off the ground, still mo shots, 1,2,3, leaving the ground, wheels in the air, landing again. Kill the film. On the dark screen one word comes up...Sagaris and a dedicated website say www.SAGARIS.com or something.

Aural and visial impact, 90% anticpation, 10% actual, whet the appetite, doesnt show too much and 30secs of a Sagaris operating between say 5500 and 7500revs over open countryside sends shivers down a spine, esp when you cant see it. Unseen terror is *always* more mentally intense than seen.

I love it when people rant AND get a point accross at the same time and I was expecting to sit and sigh while reading that, but I actually see your vision!!

First things first though:

The Racing Green TVR Sagaris video:
The first 19 seconds are ideal; Arty, well thought out, well shot with emotion, anticipation and subtle impact. After that point theres only a few little pieces of the video that I would leave in as most of it looks a bit too much like Getaway in Stockholme IMHO

There are a couple of mid point shots that are worthwhile and would probably work in your vision such as that between 41-44 seconds (obviously in need of some artistic lighting assistance) 50-53 seconds is also a good shot. 57-60 seconds is a belter, but needs less soundtrack more exhaust note. 1.00 - 1.02 is worthwhile. Various night shots arounf London would look excellent along with the tunnel clip.

If you add all these up spliced into the vision that you have DJC, you would be looking at maybe 45-60 seconds of screaming 6 cylinder tantilisation!

Right Ive just quickly knocked this video clip together

Its the said clips taken from the Racing Green video, but with a change in colour and due to their soundtrack, Ive had to cut sound and put a subtle piece of music over the top to fill the void created.

Basically, I think the artistic shots from the RGTVR video would work will with the vision that you suggested DJC....shame we cant get something together and create a whole new TVR advertisement

Anyway, heres the link

Its a form of facial paralysis often recognisable as a manic smile
on the recipients face whilst driving said vehicle

Noticed there's a silver Tuscan as back drop to the Pringles crisps world cup add. The one where the football stars are playing in an underground car park with the pringles tube.
A very good high level 'placement' imho, as its probably a euro wide advert.

Yeh I saw this. It's the only car in the ad where you can see the manufacturers name.

completely disagree ( but only my view) I thought it was excellent and fantastic work by Racing Green to get off their ass and really promote the car. I ahvent bought one ( yet) but that video would have been one of the reasons I went for one. The colour is actually called Jag F1 Racing Green and personally ( again only my view) I thought it looked stunning.

I agree with your points about the pirelli video though!

That a standard Tamora sounds boring, dull, droney, uninteresting, everything in fact, that it's predecessor wasnt. A little in fact what the RG vid has the Sagaris sounding like.

Congratulations on not buying one then. Im glad the video got you to the pt of not buying one yet. Let us know when you find a good enough reason to actually buy one.

That sort of "good enough, but not quite" or "close but no cigar" is worth absolutely bugger all. There is no return, there is no point. Heroic failure here is strictly Nil Point. If the damn thing doesnt make you want to go and buy on, then save your £40k and buy a Griffith instead, because frankly, there is no sane reason to buy a Sagaris over a Griffith. For this kind of PR to work it has to be the nuclear option, no ladder of escalation, no gradual drip, drip, effect, it is trying to be the direct head shot. An immediate adrenalin hit of "I have gotta get me one of these!" The RG vid is aiming there and it doesnt cut it. You can either go with the saturation effect, the drip, drip, drip of lodging something firmly in the brain, or you go for the Freddie heave into the Pavillion, RG went for the heave and holed out to Long on. Pirelli on the other hand hit the spot. Yes, their's was pretentious, complicated, long and ever so slightly wtf?, but it did convey a very potent message...whatever the the car in the video was, it *wasnt* a 911, it looked like a dragon and it was designed by Satan. *That* is a headshot.

Bits of this in a clip would do the trick IMO.

Also, a TVR at speed is more to it than a TVR posing on tarmac, in front of a sunset landscape :zzzzzzzz: . . . for print. Nuff examples in recent press.

DJC, Isn't it easy to criticise .

Having been present at the launch of the Sagaris at RG, it was amazing to witness the impact on a packed showroom full of people when the video was aired for the first time. There were a huge number of orders placed that weekend so I think the video did its job well. The Sagaris video was made by a couple of top PH guys, who (in their spare time) have been responsible for some fantastic TVR DVD's over the years. There is a massive difference in the budgets for both films so I think your criticism is harsh. So, given your vast knowledge of this particular film genre, when are you up for an Oscar nomination

A huge number of orders eh? Must equate to a huge number of Sagarii's on the road. You and I must have somewhat different definitions of huge. Not to mention different standards, there is no such thing as budget, spare time, past efforts, only the end result. This is reflect in TVR as a whole...the hardcore on here keeping bleating on about what fantastic efforts TVR achieve on fractions of the budgets of Porsche, BMW, Mercs, Ferrari, Aston, etc. how the timescales are much smaller, how they are handbuilt, how they are done by craftsmen and the end result is the current state of TVR. The outside world *doesnt care* about the excuses (and yes they are excuses to the end user), it only cares about the end product. If their verdict is Must Do Better, then Must Do Better it is, regardless of what a minority think. I dont do criticism for ego's sake or because I think I can do better, if I can criticise something then another customer can and will, therefore the producer (it doesnt matter what it is) must do better. We dont care how much of their heart and soul went into it, we just want it better. TVR is learning that nasty lesson right now.

But at the end of the day, your original post is just the opinion of one person and the only specific comments you make relate to the sound and the colour. As Karen says, it is easy to criticise but I will add that it is hard to critise objectively and constructively.

Long may TVR remain the preserve of the mad, extreme end of car enthusiasm. Long may they be something not everyone 'gets' as that means the cars remain outrageous. There are plenty enough joyless euroboxes on the road for the mainstream, middle of the road, vaguely interested in cars sort of punter. And I include Porsches among them as they are designed by committee to appeal to the broadest range of people possible. They are pop music. TVR are THRASH METAL.

Car styling clinics turn a design that a few people used to LOVE into a design that nobody minds.

I think the racing green film was good and I applaud their efforts to do more than TVR themeselves to whip up a bit of excitement about the launch of the Sagaris. But I also like DJC's empassioned vision for a TVR car ad.

Having been a writer for Nissan TV commercials among others this past year, I can't help but have a few ideas myself...... but that's another story. The plan is, when the time is right, to approach TVR to produce a campaign (print and TV) created with input from Pistonheads and tested here on PH too.

Watch this space...

In fact one of the main reasons I didnt buy one was in case I ended up being classed as a 'Gris owner. I dont think I could have handled the connotations that would bring.

Im sure that you will be the first to know when I have been sufficiently influenced enough by a third party to go out and buy one.

Well, FWIW I think the Racing Green Video is excellent and I also own a Saggy. I also love the colour, but then again my baby is covered in Chameleon Orange so you could hardly call my tastes conservative!
