Bought some spares from a well known TVR supplier on here. All was well until my card was refused at a garage. Checked with the bank to find that the supplier had taken TEN TIMES AS MUCH! After talk on phone was told it would take three days to get back. I asked they transfer it back today, didn't think it was too much to ask for under the circumstances. Said they would,,,,, they haven't! Meanwhile I'm having to use credit card. I shouldn't have to. Keep you posted after another needless phone call tomorrow. [they also said they would call me back which they didn't] NOT HAPPY. If it were me I would be fast laning up the motorway NOW to reimburse and put right.
Another instance three months back. Got a new set of tyres from recommendation on here. They took payment twice [ok, not as bad as TEN TIMES, but,,,]. Had to wait a week before I got money back. Because of which I incurred interest, of which I told them. Couldn't believe that they actually wanted copies of my credit card statement in order to consider refund!
What ever happened to service, you know, when the customer comes first sort of thing? NEVER had this sort of thing before, only since having a TVR and from the people whom 'ahem' support them. THEY HAVE MY MONEY AND ARE RELUCTANT TO GIVE IT BACK!!!!!!
You may notice I have had some good story to tell [thank god] of which I have rightfully given credit for [paint job]. But am really pissed at being taken for a tt.

Ten times over sounds like simple finger trouble and I imagine it's easily done. You have to balance your wish to get the overpayment back against the suppliers wish not to give away nine times the price until they were absolutely certain the overpayment had occured.

I have found some outfits do prefer the taste of money to customer happiness/loyalty...
No wander businesses are going under like theres no tomorrow...

Theres nothing much one can do, if 'they' have your money, its all about patience and hope...
You can go legal, but you'll probably find the case being dragged out for ages...
You can send the boys round, but you'll just screw things up and never see a penny again...

so your best bet and friend is 'patience', make the request, and wait.
Also contact your card company and inform them of the problem.

The words "manual chargeback" are your friend.

Ring up your credit card people - the transaction is surprisingly instantaneous and can be done while you wait.

Had to use it for Ebay crooks several times.

I think it takes several days to credit back to your account, while debiting immediately. Nice.

I was checking out of a hotel in Barcelona a few years ago after a conference, they ran my card through before I had a chance to check the bill. I noticed a few thousand pounds worth of conference costs on the card which were for someone else (from a partner company - I think he might have tried it on). The hotel immediately realised their mistake and took them off the bill and put them onto his. However, my card would now not accept the new much reduced bill as the previous large transaction 2 minutes earlier plus the new revised bill put me over the limit. The credit took several days to come through. Simple mistake cost me a lot of hassle. Luckily I had a second credit card to hand.

Was it done over the phone? If a signature was not aquired by the vendor then they are taking the liability for the transaction. Simply phone your bank, tell em you didnt buy that part 10 times then they can void the transactions. Alternativly it is a simple matter of running your card no through the machine and putting the monies back on it, its just a few button presses, it can be done immediatly! you shouldent have to wait.

Bad luck mate - seems they're sooooo quick to take your money but ask for it back when the error is so obviously theirs......

Those nice folk at the DVLA managed to charge me twice for a Tax disc - then sent me another one after assuring me :-

i...they would definitely NOT take the money....and
ii..they would definitely NOT send me a second disc.

Now - get this - after they have recieved and verified completed form V14, they will send me my cheque(!) in 7 - 10 WEEKS!!!

They took the money in about 7 - 10 seconds.......

Interest? Inconvenience? Stick that right up your pipe mate!

unfortunately service like this is all to common this day and age,but like you macdeb,i find it even more so in TVR circles
To be fair,as has already been mentioned,it does take a few days for the transaction to re-appear on your account, but to not call you back when you've told them 10x the amount was taken in inexcuseable imho.Shop on your feet in future

Not quite so Im afraid - even if they raise the credit immediatly it still takes a few days for the money to get back into your bank account. Nothing to do with the trader, everything to do with the banking system.

As mentioned before, a debit is instant, a credit takes a few days. At my company we handle tens of thousands of pounds worth of card sales every month so I speak from experience, thankfully not through overcharging - just through people bringing stuff back!

Nope. Manual chargeback only works for credit cards.

I only use a debit card for small transactions where I am also present with the retailer as you have no protection with debit cards.

This has happened to us....

An £800 purchase put through as £8000....on a card with an £5000 limit.

Purely as GreenV8S says, a slip of the finger by the company concerned but incredibly frustrating even so....especially as they next purchase I tried to make was from the TVRcc office and the card was refused!

The card company were on the 'phone to Ray checking it out as I was on the phone to them....all very confusing but got sorted in the end.

Update;
Spoke with them again today. What they say they'll do is to refund me and give a discount on the parts purchased. Plus additional discount if I buy from them again. [ahem]. Seemed ok in the end and got an apology after a heated discussion. I know it was a genuine mistake which happens from time to time, and I'm OK with that. We're only human and the guy must have felt a donkey for doing so. It's the aftermath I find difficult to get to grips with, made to sort of feel sorry for the inconvenience of asking for my money back. They do now seem more eager to put it right than the tyre supplier ever did.
[Still not in my account though].

It amazes and p*sses me off in equal measure that companies still treat customers in this way......

After all - If you have a good experience with someone....you tell 5 people.
If you have a sh*tty experience....you tell 20 people!!!

At which point do companies decide they don't need friends???

I can't believe some of the crap I'm reading here. The delays to getting the money back are almost certainly due to the banks, not the supplier.

If the purchase had been made on a credit card, rather than a debit card, then a simple chargeback would sort it all out. Which just goes to show why you should always use a credit card for these things. Set up a direct debit for the full amount each month and they cost no more than a debit card to use either.

Bloke, They took £1730 instead of £173. An electronic transfer would've put it right the same day. Don't think it's 'crap' to want MY money back. The so called director didn't even phone me back to sort it out as promised. Sod all to do with the bank.
Also, The tyre episode was with a credit card and the 'simple chargeback' took a week.

The £1730 would have taken several days, maybe even a week, to clear into their account. So in other words you expected them to be out of pocket by £1,593 plus the £25 fee for a CHAPS (same-day) transfer on the offchance that the bank in the meantime didn't pull back the whole £1,730 as a contra-entry in the meantime (because I assume you tried that as well) thus leaving them £2,988 out of pocket?

Now I'll agree with you there - that is poor.
