Optimate or Accumate?

Hi,

I've just installed the fourth new battery (two under guarantee) on my rarely used Chimaera in only 5 years. Before anyone mentions it - Yes I know I should drive it more regularly, and it is this lack of use which is destroying batteries.

It is apparent looking at previous advice on these boards that I should invest in some battery conditioner type technology that maintains batteries in tip-top condition even when the car is "just standing in the garage" (hangs head in shame).

I also have similar problems with my 12v motorbike batteried petrol lawnmower.

The market leading products in this area seem to be Optimate or Accumate. My questions are, which one of these would best meet my needs? What are the differences between them, and the advantages/ disadvantages of each model? Are there any other products available which are even better? Finally, where is the cheapest place to buy one?

I have an Accumate and I've never had a problem starting my Cerb in the 18 months I've owned it. I bought mine on eBay, btw.

I use the Accumate and it's proven 100% effective so far.

Can vouch for tha accumate, tho prob all fairly similar, would guess in doing same job.
Had mine for 3 yrs, does exactly wot it says on the tin!

Optimate is for bike batteries, I use an accumate although you can get a Cirtek charger as well which is just as good.

Battery voltage can drop without any adverse effects (it drops down to 8v or so when you crank the engine) as long as it's only temporary. Battery plate sulphation occurs when the battery is left in a discharged state for a few weeks or more. Just keep it above 12v and you should be fine.
