mobil 1 seems to the recommended oil for TVR.My own service dealer recommends Magnatec(Castrol 10w/40).Apparently it''s quieter, lasts longer(it''s lubricant qualities)and of course it''s cheaper. They have clearance from TVR to use it for routine services.
I''ve always used Mobil 1(00w/40).
Opinions,anyone?
Castrol GTX Magnatec is a PART-Synthetic oil and should give poorer results when compared to the FULLY-synthetic Mobil 1, Castrol do a fully synthetic oil though, its called Castrol RS...about £30 for a 4Litre can
Mobil1 seems to have a good track record, look at the 1 million mile test on a BMW on their site..amazing (dont knows if thats real but i trust them)
Hope this helps.
I tend to use Comma fully synthetic 10/40W on my Chimp 500. Shopping around I can get it for < £25 for 5ltrs.
Happy enough with its performance, but
I do find that I go through about 4 ltrs in 6000 miles.
Anybody got any views on Comma ?
It is supposed to be an arm of Shell or something, so should put out good quality stuff.
I use Texaco F3 10/40 mineral, I did use M1 but was getting thro a litre every 400 miles! and was getting soot all over the back...a sure sign of oil getting past rings. On some good advice was told to go for the above for 2 to 3k miles then revert to F3 fully synthetic which I have yet to do. My car has around 40k on the clock and the mineral idea was to deglaze the rings. I am well impressed with F3 mineral and getting well over 1k miles from a litre which is better than my eurobox, I also don't get soot on the back. It is generally accepted that as an engine ages the required oil grade will need to alter accordingly so if anyone out there is still using M1, which is like water, then the oil consumtion will rise with age.
There are still 2 versions of Mobil 1 available at present.
Can't remember there viscosities, but the Motorsport version (with the F1 car on the front) is the thicker one.
Still bloody expensive though.
Dealer supplied car with the thinner stuff and I managed to do about 4.5K to 1 litre.
Good or bad?
Previous 4.0 chim used 2cm ( on the dipstick ) in 6 months !!! Upgraded to 500 and in 6 weeks it used a full min-to-max on the stick in 1000 miles ( dunno how much that is in litres ) seems a bit much to me. But dealer says 'they all do that sir' Anyone have same experience? Is it the norm d'you think ?
On my Griff 500, going from Shell Helix 5W-30 to Castrol RS 10W-60 my oil consumption dropped from 1 litre/400 mls to 1 litre/2000 mls. It is a lot quieter also. Remember that TVR originally recommended the "old" Mobil 1 which was 10W-50. Most of today's stuff is just too thin for the 5 litre engine.
My Griff 500 seems to use a litre per 750-1000 miles, but seems about the same whether gently cruising on the motorway, or hammering round tracks. Have to remember to check it very regularly - my previous TVR 350i had a 115,000 mile old (std Vitesse) lump, and rarely needed a top up between its annual 3000m service!
I'd tend to agree with the approx. figure of 1000m per litre on Mobil 1.
Someone raised the interesting point - what IS the oil capacity between full & empty on the dipstick?
If anyone knows, I'd really appreciate the info - you never want to over fill with oil, but before a long trip e.g. Le Mans (unless you've room for spare oil) you do want to cram it to the max. I don't know why the data isn't listed in the owners handbook.

Thanks everyone for the info and opinions-my engine is getting on for 50000 miles so me thinks I'll be switching oil after the next service. At present using mobil 1 00/40.Use about 1 litre every 2000 miles or so.I do find that the level is quite critical-has to be right at the max for best running-even a few millimetres down and you can feel a slightly rougher engine response.
