Cloned Reg Plates

Just had a lovely note from Lancs Police saying my Griff was causing an obstruction on a Preston road 1.5 month ago. Or rather a car with the same reg No was; and that I should pay the fine!
However I was at work at the time - 256 miles south east of the location, and my Griff was tucked up in bed 260 miles south of the incident!
I have duely written, explaining situation - asking for details of the vehicle to which the penalty notice was attached - as it could not have been mine!
Anyone else suffered the same incident - and were police happy with your mitigation?

to report it and get a crime number. I think they are fairly used to cloning these days.I had an NIP 2 months ago asking who was driving when my car was involved in a hit & run. As it happened it was quite close to where I lived, but I was at work and the car was locked in my garage ( had not been used all week ).
I wrote all this on the back of the NIP and also suggested that a police officer come to inspect the car as it clearly had not been involved in an accident. I posted it off, and have not heard anything since from the police. I have since heard on the local news that someone died in what I think was the same hit and run accident ( same day and place ). I would hope that if the police thought it was me they would have been in touch by now.

About 8 years ago I was sent a parking ticket for an offense committed in Southall. When I questioned the coucil about it and said I was not prepared to pay as I considered myself innocent until proven guilty they said "that does not apply to parking offenses, sir". I said I would go to court & defend myself to which they said the Beak would probably fine me for wasting the court's time! After much persuasion and a letter they eventually agreed to send me a copy of the original ticket which showed the car to be a blue Astra - not my car! When I told them this they said I had to send them the original V5 to prove that it wasn't my car, they would not even check with DVLA for themselves. They never wrote to even tell me they had quashed the fine, I just never heard any more other than getting the V5 back in a brown envelope.

I was involved in a smash on the M4 coming back from S Wales, where my 1 yr old escort was sandwiched between a merc and lexus...... this resulted with car being reshelled some 4 months later....... anyway about 8 months on I got a call from an insurance company wanting all my vehicles particulars as it had been involved in accident in Birmingham. They got my details off the police as the details given at the time off the accident were incorrect. Bare in mind I had never been to to Birmingham and at the time of teh accident was in a meeting in Sandwich (Kent). I explained all this to the insurance company who half expected my explanation becas the address given did not even exist either. That was last I heard.

I don`t think it helps that you can buy reg plates off the internet without proof that you own either the reg or the car to which it is registered!
A friend of mine had his number plates stolen off of his car while it was on his drive.
He reported it to the police and still got 2 speeding tickets through, needless to say the tickets were disregarded.

The last comment is worthy of note. I've told this tale on other threads. Mate of mine had his number plates 'stolen.' They weren't - he removed them. He reported it to local BiB who duly took a crime report. To add credence, he purchased a new set, and dutifully kept the receipt. About 12 months later when he was caught on a Gatso, he said it couldn't possibly be his van - it must be the villain who stole his plates. Camera pic just showed rear of van - result: ticket binned.
I know - PCJ etc... but he got away with it, and I don't think this is that unusual. If I had 6/9 points I'd start taking "precautions." Well, if I wasn't in my current job that is.

i was issued a parking ticket by Westminster council for parking in Park Lane at 1700, my car was in Guildford in a secure car park and I didn't finnish work till 19900. They sent me 2 letters the last one to say that the bill was now £120 as I had contested the first one. A stiff letter and my time sheet was enough as I have not heard from them in the last 6 months. It is a real pain that I had to prove my innocence, they would not even send me a picture to prove it was my car!!!
