TVR Tries to kill owner!!
Discussion
Jacking the car up to prep the chassis, jacked the front up a bit, jacked the rear up, went underneath to put axel stands under rear, popped right one in, got out to get left on, Griff collapses off jack, crushes axel stand and misses my head by 5 sec or so!! Took me 15 min to get it out of the garage as it had shifted itself 1 foot left and was 1 inch away from the wall!! No damage to car luckily, need to get back under it now, hope the murderous instinct doesn't come back!!!

Hmmm
I had a similar instance not so long ago but that was my own stoopid fault trying to be tricky and jucking up rear of car whilst parked on uneven ground
Back end slipped off trolley jack and luckily rear wheel landed on curb. I wasn't under it, had just moved to quickly grab the axle stands.
What a
Luckily the stands weren't already half under the car or I would now have a couple of extra 'unwanted' vents.

Sounds more like a case of TVR owner trys to kill TVR owner
Or is it a cry for help as in:
"'elp! there's a TVR on me 'ead!
But seriously, it's easy to get it wrong, as my Dad learnt when he propped his Cambridge on wooden blocks - which split, pinning him underneath! He was lucky - it was a heavy old barge.

Wheel comes off, wheel goes straight under car ![]()
At least if it all goes wrong you don't get crushed and you can jack the bugger up again.
Are you really thinner than your wheels?... (Ok i typed that thinking about my skinny 185 section tyres.... i'm gonna guess that TVR's tyres are a few mm bigger...)

while on the desk. With face straight downwards on desk......from desk to back of head is 9.5 inches.
Front wheels 9 inches
Rear wheels 10 inches
So if you use a rear wheel then you should be ok.
Use a front wheel and you'll be in pain

I am thinking about doing some work on the underneath of my car. Taking the wheels off, removing any loose powder coating on out-riggers and wish bones, rust treating and then painting them (hammerite or similar as reccomended on other threads, POR 15 has been mentioned). Preventative measure more than anything else.
However hearing stories like this makes me even more cautious.
Any one got tips on best jacking points, and places for the axel stands on a chimaera? Had a look in the bible but didn't really give any tips.

I am starting to look at a full car ramp system from a company called JT Products (they have a website) down near Taunton.
Appears you can drive onto it and then remove parts to allow access. Raises car enough to go underneath on a creeper.
Want to see a unit first before I part with any money but it looks a good system but really you can't put a price on safety.

Axle stands come in pairs and if you read the instructions will say never use more than a pair at a time. This is probably because if the car gets knocked and starts to topple, it could fall if supported only by axle stands. You can do a lot of the chassis by having the rear wheels on ramps, and the front on axle stands. I always put the stands under the square section front/back chassis rails and never the outriggers. I never jack the outriggers either, for fear of damage. I have had my car on four axle stands (it's the only way to access the whole chassis at one time without a four post lift) but you must be aware you're going against the usage instructions if you do so. It's your risk. If you're in any doubt, don't do it. I always place a wheel under the floor/outriggers too as previously suggested, and often keep the jack underneath too, having previously instructed the wife which handle to pump if I appear to be having difficulty breathing...
Basically, it's safest to do an end at a time, but NEVER rely on a jack and (non capitals) never rely only on axle stands. You can do a good job with one end on ramps (the Griff is too low at the front to go on the ramps) but whatever you do, take your time, double triple quadruple check the location and 'verticalness' of the stands as well as making sure the chassis members are securely located in the 'U' top of the axle stand. And if you're still in doubt, pay someone else to do it.
also a bit nervy whilst under the car on a-stands and had been mulling over getting one of these
