checking power steering fluid

Should it be at the correct level on the dipstick when the cap is fully screwed in or should it be at the correct level when you rest the cap on top of the threads without screwing it in?Any particular power steering fluid that should /should not be used.And can /will overfilling it lead to any potential damage?

What car have you got ?

(From memory it's when it's screwed in on the Cerb - need to check the handbook)

If it has 2 letters on the cap (ZF?) I'd suspect it's the same as the Cerb (so thread wound in).....

But, I don't think you can overfill power steering, so if in doubt, put too much in !

If you put too much fluid in you can get strange noises.

The level should be at the max mark when it is screwed in.

IME, the underbonnet temperatures on a TVR knacker the P/S fluid pretty quickly, and I change mine every couple of years. When I bought mine, the fluid was black and I had to flush the system through 3 or 4 times before it came clear. The level is with the cap screwed in.

How did you go about getting the old fluid out - pull off a hose?

Cahnge it every 6k miles - jug under bother disconnected hoses or just take it right off - pennies to do.
