Pleasantly surprised tonight by my ability to keep up with a Boxster S, fully open throttle, on the A50. And yes, he was trying (to get away). I kept a respectable 50-100 yards off his bumper, just matched the acceleration quite nicely. Don't think I could have caught him up though.

Didn't think a 4.0 Chim could do that. Normal Boxster, yes, but an S?

Was quite disgusted by the Pug 306 that took a keen interest in my bumper when nearly home, doing 70 down the A6144(M) near Carrington, nowhere to go, no room to overtake (after getting past a 40mph numpty), he overtakes the same numpty and gets 6 feet from my bumper. Total arse. I didn't even have the pleasure of blasting away at warp speed from his zit-ridden face at the lights, as he turned left :(

Quite surprised you are surprised...? A boxster S is slower than a 4.0 Chim on paper, as long as its not around the twisties you should be able to pass it really. Having owned a Boxster S and now own a 4.0 ltr V8S mine is much quicker than my Boxster was, although it has had some work and Mark Adams has remapped it?

The boxster S takes just over 6 secs to 60 mph where as the Chim is nearer 5?

Straight line grunt I'd expect a Chim 4.0 to keep up with a BoxS easily. Our Chim 4.5 out accelerates our 986S. The new 987S is quicker again though - more evenly matched with the 4.5 I'd say.

But that's not what these cars are about. The Box majors on corners. The Chim majors on straights and that wonderful V8 rumble.

And they're both there to put a smile on your face!

On paper BoxS is 5.7 and the Chim 4.5 is 4.7

Of course - you'd never subject either car to the clutch knackering punishment of doing that...and the Box clutch probably wouldn't put up with it for long either!

Agree with all your comments Don, these cars are completely different, but like you say in a straight line I would expect the Tiv to be slightly quicker than the porker. 5.7 secs to 60mph.....thats the new one, not the old one? Parrot didnt say but I assumed he was talking about the older shape Boxster S? If it was the new shape then yes there wouldnt be that much between them. A lot depends on the tune of the Tiv too, TVR always over inflated the performance figures of TVR's and in my experience only remapped and modified TVR's seem to get near the figures TVR claim, in a straight line mine can outrun a standard 4.5 Chim and mines only a 4ltr, mainly due to being modified and Mark Adams remapped.

As my everyday car the Boxster was excellent in all weathers, but since the arrival of a little one and the need for more space I had to swap it for an A8 and a Tiv. I have no regrets and to be honest if I had known what a hoot the V8S is I would never have spent all that money on the Boxster?

This is a good example of why 0-60 times are meaningless, on a couple of counts.

Firstly, as you say, few owners would be prepared to use the brutal techniques required to get 'book' 0-60 times on a regular basis, for fear of drivetrain damage.

Secondly, and more importantly in this case, the limiting factor for standing start 0-60 times on a Chimp/Griff is traction. If you sidestep the clutch at peak torque revs, it will just sit there smoking its tyres. The Boxter has less torque and more traction (being mid engined), so this is less critical. In the Boxter's case, the limiting factor on 0-60 time is more a matter of torque.

At mid-range speeds, where traction and mechanical abuse are no longer major issues, the TVR retains its torque advantage. I think if you compared acceleration 50-90mph, for example, you would find the Chimp would be substantially quicker.
It won't be until well into 3-figure speeds that the Boxter S might re-assert itself, due to better aerodynamics.
