Ridiculous cost of TVR flip paint. Any ideas anybody?
Discussion
Just put my car in for a bit of a spray to certain parts and the paint shop, having phoned around, have said the paint is going to cost £450 per litre! It's a flip paint. He said he can't quite believe that price as he usually pays in the region of £60 per litre for paint.
Does anybody have any ideas on where to source these paints that might be cheaper? This quote was from Custom Paints.

What colour are you looking for? Maybe a bulk buy and see if you can get a discount? I'd like some reflex green.Does anybody have any ideas on where to source these paints that might be cheaper? This quote was from Custom Paints.
13 years ago my local painter could get chameleon paint here locally. But I don't know whether it was ready-mixed paint or the components that were then mixed by the painter.
Today it is said that the paint is only available from specialists and that seems to be Custom Paint. I would wish at least for a store on the continent.

I went searching out of interest and happened across an older thread, links to suppliers here and info of alternatives https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

We had Gerbil the TVR paint shop manager come to our last regional TVRCC meeting to talk about his time at the factory.
From memory he said it was 5 litres of paint for the T cars and 6 for a Cerbera.
I'm not sure Gerbil ever sprayed a car , but he does a lot of talking No offence meant ..caught any fish recently ?From memory he said it was 5 litres of paint for the T cars and 6 for a Cerbera.
That price appears reasonable. Shortly after the first Tuscan "chameleon" paint cars went on sale, I remember reading that it cost £600 per liter - and that must be over 20 years ago.
Someone somewhere may be making a cheap version ; but will it match properly, or last properly? Is that really what you want on your pride and joy?

I'm not actual seeing any competition for price unfortunately. It seems to be Custom Paints or nobody. Someone somewhere may be making a cheap version ; but will it match properly, or last properly? Is that really what you want on your pride and joy?

Seems reasonable to me. I paid £400 or £500 a litre quite a few years ago for Rosso Pearl when I had the cerbera resprayed.
So you think that £450 represents the true cost of manufacture plus a reasonable percentage mark up for profit rather than a ransom from one company who know you can't go anywhere else and have no choice but to pay whatever they ask for?Personally, I think the price is ridiculous but I suspect I'm going to have to pay it.
Even the paintshop I went to for a quote for the job were a little perplexed.

IMHO, the most unusual colours have always been expensive, in fact don't appear to have gone up in the 18 years I've had my car. If you don't want to pay it, pick a different simple colour.
