I bought a Chimaera last week that has been fitted with Canems. I don’t know much about aftermarket ECU’s, knew I wanted it because it makes the car run more smoothly but I hadn’t considered the maintenance side.

Is Canems good for diagnostic work? I have a slight miss at the moment, the plan is to do a full service including plugs and this got me thinking about diagnostics.

Most of them have their own software available to connect and view/change the data and do have some test procedures, not sure how in depth it is with Canems.
I don’t think they will give you fault codes or tell you problems though.
Not sure how you get it for Canems to be honest and what features it has.

I've not looked at it myself but there's a comprehensive manual for the Canems on line. For diagnosis it says that the system includes an LED system but for full diagnostics you will need the injection tuner CD which I assume you can buy.

Whilst not a tvr I've swapped to a Canems ignition only ECU on my car from a nodiz unit. The canems is much much better and cured a misfire I'd been chasing since I first ran it even after swapping the nodiz for another new one.

If you speak to David at Cannes he is really helpful and easy to deal with. He even let me purchase the unit on a return basis if it didn't fix my misfire.

The software I have if probably different from the full ECU one. However mine has a data logging function and you can check the crank signal readings. (Mine only reads crank and TPS)
On mine the led on the front will blink red on a misfire if it's not fired the coil for any reason.

I had Canems on a Chimaera I sold in June 2019. There was a CD-ROM that I uploaded to my laptop and was able to connect to the ECU to display and change all sorts of settings and readings. It all went with the car. I needed a serial to USB converter to connect to it.

You can set the idle speed (although the type idle bleed air idle valve you have will affect its settings on a cold engine) and although it won't tell you exactly what a fault is, the amount of information displayed will aid in diagnosis. It's how the engine mapping, ignition advance etc is changed too. I do have a photo taken when I had it, this is the sort of thing you see:

Lloyd Developments have fitted many Canems systems to TVRs and were very helpful, even receiving a part for test when I had a racing idle speed. As mentioned above, you can drive with a laptop connected and create data logs. This could probably be done wirelessly too. Turned out to be an air leak somewhere. frown They can probably help if you need software:

Thanks everyone, some really useful info there. I think I need to get myself a laptop. I have the cable so looks like I just need to buy the CD for the software.

Also .. If you're struggling you could pop over to track v road in clitheroe as they have used canems in the past and might be able to help you with diagnosing anything in the future.

Ah, that’s good to know thanks. I’ve always meant to get across to them and now you’ve said that they know Canems that gives me even more incentive.
