Hi all

So my Griffith 500 has been up for sale for a while now and with very little interest, the car I think is first rate with all of the chassis work etc done and the price is competitive is it just that COVID has killed off any potential interest in the marquee. I have not been following any other TVR models but the 911 seems more buoyant... which is where i am going next when i have sold my 500...

Just trying to see where i am going wrong! thanks alex

Maybe you aren't advertising it in the right places. Maybe your price is too high. I imagine the market for luxuries of this sort will be depressed by the economic chaos we're facing. Autumn is a bad time to be selling sports cars in any case.

I believe the market currently for these cars is as a collection investment rather than a toy. That means cars that are standard, low mileage and original will shift and for good money. Anything with after market parts, dubious or missing history or has been anything but a garage queen is going to struggle.

I sold my 5.5 chim in February after advertising it on PH. It's sold within the day for the full price.

Not thinking, I left the advert on PH for two or three weeks afterwards. I didn't receive another call.

Just the right guy at the right time. Otherwise as said above I am sure it is harder to sell at the moment.

I thought about a 911 briefly but went for something a little more pure in the handling department so bought a Boxster S. Beautiful cars to drive!

Good luck!

Hi

So the car is on Pistonheads classifiieds ( obvs) , AutoTrader and Facebook Market Place , anywhere else people can suggest thats worth looking at? I am debating on ebay auction but really not liking the idea at all

The car is basically standard, the only visible change is that it has VX220 seats instead of the awful ( in my own personal opinion) TVR seats though they will be sold with the car, otherwise its a different CAM and upgraded air in let. Its had all of the chassis work done but the mileage is 82,000.

Unfortunately i am selling as we have a large greyhound and he wont fit on the parcel shelf ;-) so the car is not getting used as much hence wanting a 911 which does have a "rear" seat.

I am not allowed to put a link to the advert, unfortunately.

I completely agree it only needs 1 person to want the car!!!...

Any advice much appreciated Cheers Alex

Even though my car was heavily modified I took out the rollbar and upholstered Lotus Seats and fitted the standard cream leather ones. The car looked pretty standard but obviously had the advantage of more power and other upgrades which were all, “hidden “.

I think the market is understandably very flat. I've been talking to various dealers about moving my Tuscan on for a Boxster but like yours it at "well used" miles even though a perfect history and great condition. The TVR specialist I've used for servicing is now not taking any cars for sale, even on SOR, until next spring.

At the recent Oulton Park Gold Cup there was a display and auction of what I understand (2nd hand info) over 100 cars inc 2 TVRs only 20 something where sold and neither of the TVRs went. It's clearly not the best market to sell in at the moment.

You seem to be well covered in the ad department. Just browsing through the classifieds there are about 12 cars around your price, for it to sell its either going to have to be someone's perfect car or you need to reduce the price. My opinion is it's the price that needs adjusting if you want it to go.
I always have what some would say an over simplistic view on selling cars, that is if it's priced right it will go and if my car is up for sale then it's up for sale to be sold not sit around on the classifieds for a year

I think it is a very difficult time to sell any car which is not seen as a necessity. Our TVRs are generally viewed as being an optional luxury item and when there is so much uncertainty in the world most buyers are holding off until they can see a more settled future.

My own Tuscan is advertised in the PH classifieds for the second month running and within this time I have really only had two “bites”. Firstly, was a guy who after we returned from a test drive announced he wanted it but had to sell his own car first (why people do this when they are not in a position to buy really winds me up). Last Sunday, another potential buyer was gushing about it, but wanted to see more examples over the next couple of weeks including one at a dealer where he saw a warranty as being a big plus point.

When the current advert expires in eight days, I’m going to forget about selling until next Spring as I was only looking to replace it with another TVR. I think it is already competitively priced for such a great example and don’t want to give it away.

Interestingly, in July I advertised my daily driver and it sold within a week and judging by the interest it generated, it could have been sold several times over.

Thanks for input i 100% do agree its a luxury item, though for a 2 seater sports car its surprisingly usable ie you can get a decent amount of luggage in the boot and take it away for a week

I will have a look at the pricing at this price though looking through any cars at a similar or lower price are insurance write off's (D / C) , which of course affects the price or have a few minor issues to deal with? when compared against other cars on pistonheads classifieds. Though i do agree on first glance that some of the look better than mine...

A few observations and thoughts

I sold my Chimaera earlier this year - took a bit of a hit on price compared to expectations and what others were advertised (note the word) for.
Now I appreciate that my location wasn't local to most buyers but I still expected folk to ravel to view.

Spoke to Mark Cosh at Amore - a really helpfull guy, he advised replacing the comfortable supportive MX5 seats with the originals which I did.

There are a few TVR been on ebay recently and haven't hit the reserve price

There has been a Tamora which needs a little bit of a tidy up - only reached £15100

Griff prices have definitely fallen from the highs of two or three year ago.

Some other marques and models are being advertised and sometimes sold for ridiculously high prices, even wrecks....You should have bought a Ford/Older Lotus/Imp/Sunbeam Lotus/

I sold my 99 T reg Griff in June. It was on Car&Classic for a couple of months, and sold to the first person who viewed it, for full asking price. I sold my T350 yesterday, took a bit of a hit on the asking price, as I'm moving to Spain in a few weeks. Didn't need the cash for it, but didn't want the hassle of selling from Spain.

the market for cars is dead...as long as its not a toy/fun car in a lower price range...like a seven-type kitcar...

with the actual c19 situation, expected currency devaluation (inflation), plus the general panic about CO2, climate change etc. "clever" investors do not see cars anymore considered as "collectors" items.

so what does it mean? you should sell your car as quick as possible...at the moment there is a chance to get at least "something" for your car.....

Not sure what more you can do at present, apart from dropping the price to a ridiculously low level.
My Tams been for sale pretty much all year, but is at the high end price-wise for a private sale so didn’t expect it to sell quickly, that said, I have agreed to sell it to 3 different individuals who have all given back word at the last minute...........frustrating!
