Took the Tuscan for an MOT this morning. It never gets old. Went to a high street place as they are currently doing cheap MOTs and you can book online.

I offered to stay with the car and help out while they MOT it. As usual, the garage say that they have seen TVRs before and they know what they are doing.....(why do they always say this?)

Started by watching the chap fail to get in by staring at the door. I show him how to open the door.

Then - he's unable to start it (immobiliser), I show him how to do that.

Then he's unable to get it into reverse. I show him how to do that.

Then he does manage to get it into the MOT bay - progress at last.

At this point, he says, they'll be fine.... what he meant was they would all gather round and spend 2 minutes trying to open the bonnet by pulling the emergency door release handle.

Me: That handle won't open the bonnet - the bonnet is bolted down
Him: Well if I can't open the bonnet, I can't do the test?
Me : you don't need to open the bonnet to perform an MOT test.....

He then declared that he didn't want to MOT it any more as it was "too hard"

I then remade my offer to stay and help smile

He then tried to measure the emissions. I explained he probably didn't want to bother doing that smile

He then needed me to operate the lights - most of them worked (bar the fog). I promised not to drive in foggy conditionssmile

He then declared that because the clutch was so bad (it's not), it might be best if I drive it onto the rollers and perform the brake test. Which passed - hooray.

He then stuck it on the ramp and turned to me and said the best line ever - "I'm not actually looking for anything anymore, I just want it to pass so that I can get rid of it"

20 mins later, I have a nice MOT certificate in my hand. job jobbed.

I thought that this kind of scene can only appear in France :-)
I have a mk1.5 Chimaera so outside the door is still to be opened via the flush button, so usually, this is going fine. But this is always funny then to see the guy stuck inside the car playing with the ash tray, searching desperately how to open the door or even the windows (to beg for help).

I once went to kack fit as they had the cheap aircon top up offer.
Same again, offered to drive it in etc "Nah we're fine mate - he's driven Ferrari's" He'd done the three laps experience day at thruxton. All six of them trying to open it, one got phone out and googled, then couldn't start it of course.

I drove it in for them, then muppet broke the schreider valve on the aircon intake and all my gas was pissing out. "Oh it's bust" yup that happens mate if you ram the fitting on on the piss.
Just replace it.. "Oh we haven't any" What? you're a tyre place etc...

Got a mobile specialist to come to work, after a fight kack fit paid the bill

Years and years ago when I was a bit (more) stupid I took my Esprit for an MOT at a similar place. They said come back in an hour (why, so they could try it of course).

Came back to collect, it passed and their comment as I took the keys was ' it's not very fast is it! '

Rather annoyed I returned to the car and...

smelling the cooked rear pads I realized they had left the handbrake on

Not on a TVR.

Reason(s) for Failure;
Front passenger door cannot be opened from outside the vehicle (6.2.B.1b)

Front passenger door was locked. Worked fine when it was unlocked. Unsure the tester had ever encountered a car without remote central locking.

I don’t mention it when I have cause to revisit. Well, at least not very often.

:Similar experience with my MOT last week. They said "no you don't need to stay" but I hung round anyway, When they eventually got the Tuscan onto the ramps I heard an Almighty scream, I run into the garage and the MOT inspector was shouting " someone get me out of here I suffer from claustrophobia" !!
I let the poor shaken guy out, and even pointed our the roof was not even on the car!! Anyhow after 5 minutes of composing himself, I also left with my MOT.

In my old MOT history the “ no rear number plate lights” crops up A few times, even though they always work.

A mate had this with an X3 - only sprays every third use of the windscreen wipers, IF the headlights are on.

The history on mine has ‘exhaust noisy’ and ‘brake lines held on by cable ties’. It also failed the emissions test spectacularly one year - luckily it is a pre-cat!

I've used the same place for decades - a very reputable Alfa specialist in Scotland who deals with lots of unusual stuff.....but my old Griff got one of the guys stuck inside so now I hang around with the Cerb, saves any grief wink

So all you chaps reporting problems having taken your TVRs to non specialist garages?

Can we draw any conclusions?

Can we see a possible remedy to the problem in the future?

MOT's on strange or old cars is always fun, just need to find a sensible test center. I used to own a 1932 Austin seven special a few years ago, no one at the test place would drive it, It took a few minuets to check. The tester always just walked round the front and said it looks the same as last year, the brakes have passed. I had to do hand signals to get a pass on the non existent indicators. All done with plenty of humour. but never really checking anything.

Think you are probably misunderstanding - in my case, this is purely for an MOT at £29.

Servicing, upgrades, maintenance etc are all handled by a specialist (imho one of the best). But I don't think it's the best use of anyones time to use said specialist for an MOT (when they just take it somewhere else for the actual test anyway)

I have 2 special memories of MOTs

Mk 3 cortina. Came back to collect it to find tester and manager in a heated discussion. Tester had opened the door against the ramp and dented it. The dent was not lonely as it joined a number of others. Manager started talking about getting it to a local body shop for repair but I said it seemed a little pointless considering the general condition of the car. He then asked the tester if it had passed. As the tester was in the middle of an errrrr he was met with DID IT PASS?
One years ticket and no charge.

Ultima GTR bright yellow. MOT manager said to me I'm very sorry sir but I hate having to test your car. It brings the whole workshop to a standstill for an hour. Does it really take 6 blokes to MOT a car.

Knowing how the motor trade works, and knowing the general intelligence level of the average Herbert that works in it, I wouldn't go to a 'fast fit' for even a free MoT! ..in fact I wouldn't trust any of them for a screen wash top-up... not a week passes without me having to correct a misfitted bulb/ battery/ wiper blade (!) and worse from these crack-handed eejits. So why the hell would I trust them to as much as open the door of my P&J?
At least the specialist garages' choice of MoT centre is likely to reflect the respect they themselves have for our very special cars, and they'll be well used to seeing them too. It wouldn't surprise me if they stay in attendance and assist.
