There was a link in the Porsche area for the green Boxster S at Baron's next week, but looking at the lots, I see they've a green Chimaera too. And a Sagaris and the last Tuscan Mk 3 too! Here's all 3 for your inspection:

Sagaris, guide £40k - £50k:

Tuscan S, guide £28k - £34k:

Chimaera 400, guide £7k - £10k:

I've already found the Chimaera was in another auction (PDS) in February. frown No result displayed. Seats look filthy, broken bonnet pull and cracked dash. not mentioned by Baron's .......

https://www.bidspotter.co.uk/en-gb/auction-catalog...

And the same car was at Baron's last December with a guide of £9k - £12k, presumable didn't sell. Lazy arses (vendors, auctioneers or both) have even used the same photos 8 months later...

At least it now has a new MoT!

You are being unfair to Barons. They say:

"Note: This description is provided by the vendor and unless otherwise stated is 'Not Verified' by Barons or any person employed by Barons. Prospective purchasers are advised to satisfy themselves as to the accuracy of any statements made, whether they be statements of fact or opinion."

It's auction life. If you want a warranty, a perfectly presented and immaculate car, then buy from a specialist dealer, with a shiny showroom at top price.

If you want a bargain, then head to an auction, but don't get auction fever and over-pay. Only buy if it is a bargain. These cars are not some fleet disposal that Avis or a leasing company want rid of quickly. They are being auctioned for a reason, rather than being sold privately or at a dealer, and the reason generally is that they are a heap, with lots wrong with them, and require big money spending on them.

If they have been on the auction blocks time and again, it is because the seller is unrealistic about their value and/or there are lots of problems.

I've been to Classic auctions several times as well as normal ones, and bought from them. Obviously, normally, you can inspect at your leisure, and yes, covid 19 changes the ability slightly of an auction house.

But to simply punt across the condition description to the responsibility of vendor, suck 5% fees off AND 12 - 15% from the buyer is taking the pee I think. What ar ethey doing to earn their commissions? Blatantly obvious flaws should be shown, or mentioned (I see the cracked dash can be seen now). Classics have been reaching just as daft prices as before at some of these places, and one point I agree with you on is that if you want a warranty, use a dealer, but some more transparency would help.

What does any auction house do differently, whether it be a junk sale, general sale, wine, antiques? They have a business to run, staff and premises to pay for. It's caveat emptor every time basically. You could buy a bottle of Chateau Latour for £2,000 and it could be vinegar. Your problem.

The auction house have an obligation if the description is way out though. You can't sample a sealed bottle of wine so the comparison isn't the same, you ca test a purchased car.

I noticed the grey XR4x4 that 'sold' in the March auction at CCA was re-entered for the June one. i arranged to view several of the entries and when I queried it, was told the original vendor had been 'economical' about the description and the buyer played up about it. The sale was cancelled.

This was the first time for £5940:

This was the 2nd time in June for £5500:

It was the yellow Cerbera I had been interested in but it had no air con fitted and having had a 4.5 version before, I know how hot they get inside without it! It was pretty good otherwise, apart from the tyres on the front being too big.

There has to be a lot wrong with that Tuscan for that sale price not to be a bargain!

It was up for Auction 12 months ago at Barons for the same estimate... £28.6k does seem ridiculously cheap.
