Are we TVR owners like MJ fans

Yesterday I was reading the 'Tuscan 2 on TG' thread at the same time the Michael Jackson trial climaxed. I watched MJ fans being interviewed and they'd support MJ regardless of anything - because they totally believe in him. It struck me, while reading the thread, that TVR have something of a 'cult following' who passionately defend TVR almost to the same degree.

Hmmm, a very interesting point. I've had several discussions regarding the whole MJ thing, most of which are not actually relevant to your point, but I have wondered why the "fans" are so totally convinced of his innocence. Presumably, the majority have never met him, and let alone know him well enough to form a well educated opinion of his personality. Based on that premise, it would be easy to say that they have some kind of faith in MJ (faith being defined as believing in something without having factual proof).

With me and TVRs. Well, I guess I own one, drive one, pay for one. And I'm passionate about it (them), even though I know they're not perfect. From the posts I read on here, I get the impression that the majority of people who share my passion have a direct experience of them, which gives a logical explanation of why they might be passionate about TVR and all that they stand for.

In conclusion, I can understand why you might make a comparison, but I don't believe it to be valid, since our (TVR fans) passion is based on the reality of experience, despite the (well documented) foibles, rather than a personally unsubstantiated belief in innocence.

I would be interested to hear the views of others...

yes tvr has a following ,but we dont do kids and are not on the same planet ,we buy fast cars and try to put the fear in to each other ,if you need to link the two you shoud sell your tiv

LOL. There's as much chance of me selling my Tiv as there is in an MJ fan selling their records. And, as far as I'm aware, my car has never abused kids. What I was trying to articulate is that I've been astonished by my TVR ownership - possibly to the point of passionate. Such devotion to the marque could be perceived as 'fanatical'.

Far from it, my car's excellent value for money, but I'd let Whacko babysit the kids, before I ever told you it was the most reliable car I've ever had.

It's fast, sounds good, looks good, rare, people point at it (or the ugly div driving It) on every journey. But im a realist, it eats clutches, speedo doesn't go below 40, door buttons work when they decide to etc. etc. That's a fair evaluation of my car.

Not, "somebody hasn't shown me where the starter button is, so this car is crap"

yeah, i have to agree on the MJ point, it seems his fans think he is completley innocent, and brush away the 'sharing of his bed with children' by him simply 'living his missed childhood'.

Its the same for car enthusiasts, and not just TVR's, read any appropriate forum after a TG episode where their car got a luke-warm reception and they will slate the program, presenters etc... refusing to accept that their car may actually have faults, and not appeal to everyone...

I'm sorry but I have to correct you there - how many times have you read about TVRs abusing kids on PH alone?! I can recall several stories of them making children cry off the top of my head! :-D

You obviously didnt read the thread then.

I don't think any TVR owner would claim that their car is a paragon of reliability. I certinly wouldn't. The thing that got the goat of so many was the gratuitous way that they approached the whole thing. He couldn't find any real faults with the car (apart from the fact that he couldn't drive it v well ) so they spent 5 minutes saying it was a crap car because some herberts from a factory were unable to get in, start it and drive away - a positive bonus! And all the wanky references to it being a Russian car. FFS..........

The 5th gear review (where VBH drove the car a darn site better than lard arse did) was critical but was fair and balanced because 5th gear is a car show and TG is a wank for Clarkson and his gnome.

Both are now going the same route - bring back the old TG - proper reviews of cars not tainted by some stunted pigmy who loves hollowed out tree trunks (Morgan) and the other bent lurch who will prostitute himself for an overgrown Ford!

I did actually, half of it was slagging off the 'competitor car', and the other half was saying Clarkson knew nothing..

and yes, i also read the fifth gear thread where you all winged about them spending all the time drifting and saying it was a weekend car..

But perhaps I phrased my statement wrong.

And we as a community are viewed in the same way - how ridiculous (NOT) to assume that just because we own very fast cars that we all speed

Do we prefer to presume innocence or believe romour and innuendo. Don't misunderstand me - I am no fan of MJ, but I have always thought him a bit detached from reality as such Petrolheads are also being viewed more and more as being detached from many people's reality. Judge and be Judged.
