Plenty of auto range rovers with Rover V8's. That said, if the autobox is physically larger, there may be an issue with fitting in the chassis.

If you are happy with something a bit older, then the ford engine wedges were available with an autobox.

Edited to add that in the other thread someone said that they had converted a 350i. I don't remember that part of the chassis being any wider than the Griff chassis, so you could probably convert a Griff / Chim.
