I've got the Meguiars Clay with quick detail spray. It's very good. Takes off all blemishes on top of the paint leaving it as smooth as glass ready for the application of wax.

I think it's brilliant stuff! Must use it with a lubricant and use it after washing but before using any polishes etc. I wish I had discovered the stuff years ago as it makes subsequent polishing soo much easier.

I used Meguiars clay when some d*chhead neighbour decided to paint his house on a windy day and coated my car in hundreds of tiny paint specks, the clay removed them without removing any of the cars paint work. I also found it handy for removing dead flyies and their guts of the car.

Detailing clay isn't something you need to use very often. It's designed to shear off contaminants that have embedded themselves in the surface of the paint.

You should use it once you have washed your car, before and polish / glaze, and use a lubricant with it. The lubricant can be dedicated clay lubricant, quick detailing spray, or even lots of soapy water. Only a couple of passes with the clay should be necessary, you don't need to apply pressure, and once the clay is dirty, you should roll it up and flatten again to give yourself a clean surface of clay.

The difference should be a paint surface that feels a lot smoother than before claying. If you really want to do a test, try dragging a sheet of cling film over the surface of the paint before and after - you should notice that the cling film will want to stick to the paint much less once the surface has been clayed.

My opinion - it does make a big difference if your car has never been clayed before. I only clay about 3 or 4 times a year.

Added to answer the questions in the first message:
There aren't many manufacturers of clay, so even though it's a different brand / colour, it may be the same product. I believe it's manufactured rather than dug from the ground / a pond, so I guess that means it's not really clay.

You can make phallic shapes from it, but you'll need to warm it up in your palms first (oo-err).

Once I've used the clay, I throw it away. I split a 200g bar into 3 lots.

the photo in my profile is from before I bought the car - it's much shinier now

Here's one brand:

From www.meguiars.co.uk/
Choose Shop, Enthusiast, Surface Prep, and there is a clay&lubricant pack for £11.99

I've actually been using a different brand which I bought in the states. I wouldn't expect the 2 to be any different other than mine was cheaper
