Hi, can anyone give me advice on opening my boot (solenoid burned out). I have tried the 'Secret' method but cannot get it to work, so before I start cutting into the bodywork can someone help....!

Without going into detail for obvious reasons, have you tried the aforementioned method whilst an assistant simultaneously pushes down on the bootlid, to reduce tension on the mechanism? Or even rapidly pushes down then pulls up a few times, to try to allow the method to work successfully?

Just a thought.

All the secrecy about the "secret method" amuses me. It's a fibreglass bootlid, If someone with ill intent wanted in they are not going to fanny around looking for hidden cables or whatever when it can be prised/ripped open in seconds.............. imho wink

I did assume the OP would prefer not to use a 4 foot crowbar to wrench open his boot, even if it could be easily opened that way . . . but your point is valid, though probably not much help smile

Thanks for replies, I think I am resigned to some bodywork re-arrangement unfortunately.......

You need to be patient and take your time.

Can you explain how exactly it has failed? Is the catch broken?

I once had to do this on a cross channel ferry at Dover because my Cerb remote didn't like the electrical fields around the car deck. Talk about under pressure with a flat blade screwdriver!

I thought I was destined to head back and forth to France for a day.

The cable should really release the lock with a good tug. But I can only assume you have tried this. Have you tried getting someone to pull the boot upwards as you pull the cable?

This - we had a chim bootlock fail whilst abroad on a trip. It needed some bouncing up and down on the bootlid to help it release.

Not ever having owned a Griff, I'm not aware of this cable. My Chimaera didn't have one and my Cerb had a handle in the boot to open the driver's door in the event of a flat battery/cross channel ferry.

A good point. It might be a fuse/TVRism.

Could also be an electrical connection - there’s an old thread on Ph where this was the issue (working under carpet behind seats).

The 10amp fuse had blown, also controls the volt, oil pressure gauges etc. I replaced it, gauges work but no apparent movement from the boot solenoid.

My Chimaera has regular boot opening issues. I've got a loose connection somewhere. If I use the "alternative" method enough times the boot release fixes itself. (Amazing how often TVRs fix themselves hehe)

I've also had when you can hear the click but catch doesn't release, when eventually open some lubrication on the moving catch helps.

1998 It had the flush fit number plate, not the later angled one, but had the door solenoid switches under the mirrors. If it did have a cable in the cabin for boot opening, I never discovered it.

I'm aware of the 'secret' access method, having used it several times on my Cerb. However, I don't remember there being a cable method from the cabin on my Chimaera, there definitely wasn't one on my Cerbera. I don't remember seeing a cable attached to the boot lock, and where would it go to? A hidden handle in the cabin?
