So a 500 Griff would be a supercar but a 4.3BV not (by the definition of your topic title). Same between a 450 Chim and a 500?

Come to think of it, that means nothing after the Griff 500 (apart from that lunatic 5 litre dry-sump Cerb) is a supercar.

I think your question needs a bit more thought

How about you start with your own defintion of supercar

My answer would be any TVR is a supercar!!

From the Wedges, V8S to the Cerb and Griff, then onto the Sagaris and the Tuscan Mk2...

Every single one a supercar!

Dave.

As much as I love TVR's... and I seriously seriously love them, I don't think any TVR can be regarded as a Supercar.

Due to the very ethos of TVR (big bang for your buck), they can't be.

A lot of what makes a Supercar is the "unattainable" feeling for some people and that, unfortunately, is largely influenced by the price.

As big an amount of money £55k or so is, it's only a third of a pricetag of what I regard as a real Supercar. new prices of course

Having said that, the Sag, is the only thing I've come across on four wheels that can go toe to toe with the Murci...!

All in MHO of course.

The definition at one time was anything to hit 150+ MPH, although i guess this has changed due to more and more cars hitting that figure.

The looks, sound and performance should be enough to class any griff as a supercar, everyone i have taken in it seems to think so

I may be biased

I would be inclined to agree with Mungo. But considering what TVRs could eat at the time they were built they were probably close.

All comes down to the definition. For me supercars need to be futuristic. They ought to have a fair share of techno wizzbangery (most of it probably quite useless). I guess my archetypal supercar would be the Porsche 959. Daft old Lambos with TV rear view, origami doors, massive wings when wings were new (even though pretty pointless)... supercar. Even the Honda NSX with its VVT and self-tuning exhaust wotsits and wind tunnel shape is a supercar. It needs to pull off a trick for the first time. Thus old 911 turbos are much more supercar to me that newer 911 turbos, even though the latter are clearly more capable cars. It helps if there are original features that are just plain mad.

Chim and Griff ... nope. No techno wizz bang, and retro styling. TVR made a play for it with the door openers, but come on ...

Cerbera ... yeah. Bespoke flat plane crank V8, bike exhausts, bonkers dashboard. Huge performance. And four seats. Non-retro styling. Supercar.

Tuscan, T350, Tamora ... no. Great sportcars all. But they're incremental steps, surely, compared to the Cerbera's great leap forward?

In my book, a 300 volume strong encyclopedia set at that too, I'd say, a supercar is a car capable of the following in stock form:

0-60 - < 5 secs

0-100 - < 10 secs

Top speed > 170

If your car in STOCK form meets the above criteria then you have an Ash approved supercar

If its heavily tuned to perform at the above levels or way better, then its a 'tuned' car, period.

But if you've turned a supercar into an even more record busting baby, then you have what I regard as an 'Ultracar'.... You heard it here first

The above yardsticks may have meant something 10 years ago, but not any more.
Try
0-60 less than 4 secs
0-100 less than 9 secs
187.5 mph +

Is it a supercar????

No.

Sporting a 500 it's probably the fasted piece of Tupperware I have owned but it just doesn't fall into the supercar bracket.

To be a supercar it has to have a certain amount of heritage and grandure.

TVRs are great fun but the 500 is no supercar.

The question here being asked within,
TVR- Supercar, does it fall in?
You might think yes, a beast at heart
But I ask you - car or cart?
It might be quick, attractive and stunning,
But if you won the lotto, would it get you gunning?

A real supercar such as the Miura,
I'm sure you'll find there's nothing purer?

A car to tresure, it might be,
But it aint no 348TB.

Autocar, in the sagaris road test edition last week, had a section on British Sportscars. The Griff 500 was described as 'more of a supercar than a sportscar'.

Yeah.

My Dad mentioned something about this. Was it voted the best used 'Grunt' car of all time, or something?

Can't recall, as I don't have the mag with me at the moment (at work).

As I see it, the term supercar implies that it is significantly faster than is available and affordable to most people. I don't think you can put any absolute number on it because the performance of commonly available cars is increasing all the time. I suspect that any recent hot hatch would have qualified as a supercar if you have brought it out twenty years ago and added a couple of zeroes to the price tag.
