Guess My 21 Year Old S/1998 Chimaera Total Spend From New ??
Discussion
Well after several late nights carefully filling and ordering chronologically the extensive 21 year history on my S/1998 Chimaera it is all done! I have scanned in all bills/invoices and have every MOT from its first @ 3 years old.
Have a guess how much has been spent that I know about and have bills/invoices for??? I think many will be surprised.

Gees. So could be £30k through to £45k then! Over how long is that? From new?
Maybe I was expecting a little less as it is a fairly basic/simple car. The only upgrade or difference from this was the Speed 6 headlight conversion.
I suspect there are a few odd bills that I might not have but seem to have most. It is pretty extensive and comprehensive. All 112 pages in a nice physical binder and also as a PDF now
Comes to just over £20k for standard routine regular servicing/maintenance/repairs.

I always find instead of using 'spent/spend', that 'invested' or 'preserved for the benefit of future generations' seems better......
Just under £1k/yr - I thought (hoped) it'd be less, some years my Chim just had a small service & Mot, nowhere this amount.
Do your costs incl for camshaft works at 50k miles, outriggers etc over & above the ordinary?
Hope you enjoy many more miles in it.

Agreed. Just about to take it to Bespoke tomorrow for another annual service. I guess at £1k per year with zero depreciation now it is great value for money for such enjoyment.
It has had new clutch, new roof, new outriggers, new wishbones and other stuff all in the last 3k miles. So the previous owner to me bore the brunt of a fair few bigger costs in their ownership luckily.

Silver lining, Ripe for a Turbo
Nice to be able to follow its time line with the history file.
It’s only the care put into them that keeps them alive and files like that just help confirm it.
I sort of agree with many peoples view in that the actual condition says more than a book of stamps but most Tvr centres tell you when something needs doing so most cars with at least recent Tvr service history will or should be good solid cars.
Your car Dean sounds like one of the many many good ones, there are a lot just not forsale I reckon.
Burghley Tvr gathering hundreds and hundreds of amazing cars.
£1000 a year, 20 years or so, can’t say fairer than that.

LOL. I think if I wanted to go Turbo or Supercharged I would be better selling mine and buying Sapper's or the Burnt Orange one @ HHC.Nice to be able to follow its time line with the history file.

Your are right that current condition is much more important than what condition it was in 10 years ago. It is nice to have the fully documented history from new though and have a car in good condition....win win.
There are a ton of cars for sale and lots of options for me at the moment. I have never seen so many good options before. Is making my decision making very difficult as there are so many, many good ones and all so different in colour combo, spec, condition, price.
When you break it down to £20 a week it seems like a bit of a bargain really. I don't smoke and never have but that is two packets of cigarette's a week!
I'll estimate £21k, so 1k per year.
I go in to a cold sweat with these threads.
I bought mu first Tuscan in Sept 2006.
After 34 miles it was taken to car hospital where, 3 months later it returned with an engine rebuild and various other bits and bobs.
It was also accompanied with its first bill.
£11k :-(
By May 2009 I had spent a further £13k and then wrote it off.
Quite an expensive 2 1/2 years.
But it was awesome while it lived. :-)

Ouch....sorry to hear that. Now when they say some things are not meant to be I am not sure that Tuscan wanted a long term relationship with you for one reason or another. I thought my introduction to TVR ownership was a little eventful.....but clearly not in comparison!I go in to a cold sweat with these threads.

Did it end in a suitably dramatic manor?

Well, when I was investigating buying my Cerbera all those years ago, I was advised they cost on average £3k a year to run, so thats £250 a month into the bank, which lets face it only leases a boring car Maybe I was expecting a little less as it is a fairly basic/simple car. The only upgrade or difference from this was the Speed 6 headlight conversion.

Big expenses have been the full body off rebuild 6 years ago for £7.5k, including all new bushes, bearings, pipework etc, built like new from the chassis up. Last year the engine was fully rebuilt which cost £15k, it's had a new clutch, alloy radiator, respray etc, no expense spared throughout it's life. Then all the servicing, tyres etc, but the money's been there to do it
13 years of ownership and I'm still quids in on my monthly fund, but only just but the car feels and looks better than ever. Not bad for a 22 year old car.

Enjoying a country lane and left it in 3rd for a fraction to long while listening to the howl of the speedsix.
Encountered lots of cow poo and the rear end stepped out to the right.
Full lock held it at 90 deg to the road but not correcting and the nose was getting closer and closer to the hedge row.
I figured that when the nose contacted it would rip it off and spin me round to stuff the rear end too.
Sure enough, this was exactly what took place, with each and every contact accompanied by a swear word from me.
All's well that ends well as the insurance paid out more than the original purchase price and my Wife searched and found my beloved Tuscan convertible.
Was my £21k close?
