I bought my Chim 500 new in 2002.

As the title suggests the plastic casing for the key fob broke yesterday. I can still use the fob by pushing my finger through the hole but would really like it fixed properly. The best my local specialist is offering is to change the alarm system for £350 + VAT.

Anybody else had this?

not too sure what alarm there is on your car but if it is the same as the earlier ones (ie Meta) then you can buy a new case for the fob. All you then need to do is split the fob at the side and take out the guts and transplant them to the new fob case. Ebay is a source for the cases or you can get them from the Meta people. Thre should have been 2 sets of keys/fobs with the car - did you ony get one??
If the alarm is a different make try a search for fob cases as you should be able to get replacements rather than fit a new alarm.

Thanks for your help Jim. I didn't find anything on EBay but I was able to buy replacement cases for both sets of keys here:-

Mine was META M300.

OP, speak to Dave Fairclough of HF Solutions tel: 07721 654829.

Dave is ex UK META dealership trained, well used to the installation in TVRs and is UK based.

Nice one, I didn't know they sold those, I've got two new fobs from Abacus Alarms a few years ago and the lack of logo always hurts a bit hehe

This is driving me mental now. The mechanism outside of the case locks and unlocks the car but I can’t get it to work inside the case. I’ve lined up the raised section which connects with button but it looks like the mechanism isn’t secure in the case. Anyone had a similar problem?

It should be secure inside the case. One of the protruding plastic pins in the case should locate in the small hole in the green plastic baseplate.

I just had my 20-year old M300 key fob fall apart. The metal 'key' bit is no longer attached to the plastic case. There is no sign of the missing spacer and tiny screw. The case is, I hope, still OK. I have just ordered a fitting kit from Abacus as per the link above. £7 in total.

Fingers crossed.
