Speaker advice
Discussion
Looking for some advice on rear speakers for a Chim. Currently only have the factory fitted Pioneer speakers in the doors and hence can't hear much when blasting down the motorway.
Can anyone recommend decent rear speakers, whether I should also replace the door speakers with the same brand, and if anyone knows a decent company to fit them in north London?.
The cd I have fitted is Blaupunkt Heidelberg CD50.

I'd probably just ry changing the fronts for some better ones first and see how that sounds - Maybe somthing like an Infinity Kappa 62i - Have a look at 16cm Co Ax speakers at www.caraudiodirect.com - Anything costing about £80+ will sound much better and save you having to cut holes in the back to fit speakers in..
Upgrading the fronts will give you enough volume with the roof on, but if you're going sans roof, you'll probably still need rears. I'll agree that Infinitys are good.
I put some 6x9" elliptical rears in mine, and it's just about loud enough at most speeds with the top down. The next step would probably be better amplification than the claimed 4x45w my head unit gives out.

I have Alpine 6 x 9s in the rear and Kenwoods to replace the original fronts. Separate power amp to each pair. The sound out of the back is excellent and frankly don't need to bother with the front door speakers. The rears were already fitted when I got the car, but look an easy enough job. They will protrude into the boot above the fuel tank.
Absolutely no problem at all hearing the music at any speed, hood up or down (your ears will be ringing though)
Purist will argue that music isn't required and will detract from the beautiful engine/exhaust note. I disagree - the right soundtrack will definitely enhance your driving pleasure and perhaps induce a little adrenalin fueled driving - most satisfying.
Rule no.1 though - turn the sound down in town. If someone hears me coming, it's gotta be because of the car - not the thump thump thump of a 12" sub-woofer as typified by the EVO/Nova Gti brigade.

Quickly got tired of constantly adjusting the volume when travelling hood down with changing speed. Tried it once then pulled the whole lot out and stuck it in a box in the spare bedroom. Favourite speakers now are tubular stainless steel construction slung under rear of car (bass reflex ports?!). The head unit is a 5-litre Rover engine.

I got Mole Valley to add another couple of the standard Pioneers to the rear, plus an additional amp...plenty enough volume now, irrespective of speed of roof.
Kerridges did the same to my Chim for the original owner, all Pioneer kit. Sounds great, but not as good as the V8, so I don't use it that much.

Hi,
I personally think that your better off putting the Pioneer ones in the back and buying some decent ones for the doors. There no point in putting decent speakers in the back of a Chim (unless you leave the back panel off in the boot) as it's a small enclosure that they sit in and sound bloody awful.
Regards
Darren

Dunno - but I miss the speakers that used to fill the rear bulkhead in my SEAC.
I've now got modern stuff installed and it only sounds OK with earplugs and the volume turned up.
Used to be that at motorway speeds and top down you could still feel the bass notes on your chest. Wind noise ? Exhaust note ? No way you could could hear them over the music
However, it's all a trade. With my new system there is actually some space in the boot; I can actually get a bag in!!!!!

Anyone that thinks speakers in the back sound awfull should come and listen to mine!!! Sound amazing!!!, Mind you the system is running at about 2000 watts!!!
To get any sort of power you need rears as the front door pods will not take anything above a 16cm without drastic mods.

Bose do some sweet little box numbers that sit behind each seat pretty much unseen but very much heard! I used some in my Griff for a short while on test but unfortunately had to give them back, the benefit was that no holes needed to be cut anywhere as they bolted/screwed through the floor,I cant remember the model no off hand but their great for Tivs
I will be upgrading the fronts soon and am thinking about putting something in the rear. Are there any speakers small enought to fit in the exisiting vent holes? I know they wouldnt sound too great but might giver a fuller sound.
Have done the reverse often enough -- had crappy little factory fitted speakers in the front of a car and fitted something nice in the rear. The front seem to add significantly to the overall sound.

I have Alpines in the front and a Power Engineering 12" Sub in the rear of my Griff. A previous owner decided to go with the sub, and it makes a big difference. The speakers were totally shot when I bought the car, so along with a decent head unit, I swapped the lot out and went with the advice of the shop.
Sounds amazing!
