Protechs, Bilsteins or Gaz Gold Pro, which one.........
Discussion
........for a Griff 500. Road use only.
Thoughts please from the PH Collective.
I've seen the thread above, which is a bit disconcerting re GGP, although I can get a full set for under £600. But is that wise?
The car currently has its original Bilsteins.
Thanks.

The "Gas Gold Pro" are the updated ones from the original "Gas Gold" so there are no issues with cracking. I have the Pro's on my Tamora (replaced on warranty from G.G.)and I find them more than adequate for road and the occasional track day. You get what you pay for and I wasn't prepared to splash out on more expensive shocks until I tried the "middle range" shocks first. So far I don't feel the need to "upgrade". If I was I would buy Ohlins.

Very well put Getsis, I fitted Gaz Gold Pros to my Chimaera a couple of years ago with great results. The springs did take a few thousand miles to settle which is perfectly normal.
After the settling process the ride became more compliant, it just required a small adjustment in ride height to get things spot on.
Thousands of miles later and they continue to perform perfectly.
A massive handling improvement over my 30k mile Billies at a very realistic price.
Recommended.

+1 for Gaz Gold Pro's, comparing alongside RR's they were very similar in design and quality.
Im no driving god but they have significantly improved things over standard for me, i need to be brave enough to experiment with the settings!!
It certainly became fashionable to bash Gaz after all the well publicised issues with the earlier design, so it's good to see people are getting good results from the revised Gaz Gold Pro design.Im no driving god but they have significantly improved things over standard for me, i need to be brave enough to experiment with the settings!!

Its also nice to see Gaz have recovered from a difficult situation, if the product is good we should all be supporting the few remaining British manufacturers (especially in a recession).
In my experience it's well worth adding a set Leven rose jointed drop links too.
Refresh any worn suspension bushes using the metalastic type with the addition of the later T car thrust washers.
Finally, poly bush your anti roll bar mounts & get the geometry set up by someone who understands what they are doing.
Follow all this & anyone can have a fantastic handling TVR for a very reasonable outlay (cost me £1000 all in).
Was told about the original cracking / quality issues with the Gaz shocks; looking for fast road / occasional track shocks but not prepared to pay top dollar as I felt that I wouldn't get the benefits - chose ProTech shocks for my Cerbera and very happy with them. Took little bit of setting up with bump rates etc and once set (seem to be easily adjustable to then give you a useable range to "tweak") very happy. Have heard that the more expensive shocks (e.g Nitrons) although perform better in short term need more regular rebuilds - therefore this can add to the total running costs.... something to think about
