Nice to see the Tuscan trouncing the M3/Skyline/911(2wd)/RS4 in the latest issue of EVO. I was surprised that it beat them in all the tests though. TED, 0-100-0 were obviously TVR stuff, but the slalom and the constant raduis thingy - wow!).
They even say it 'slalomed' faster than the 911 Turbo.
T/.
Who whole article seems to turn on a few words on page 89:
"Judged purely on EVOness, the Skyline and Rs4 drop down the finishing order.." (leaving the Tuscan on top)
"Add everyday usability to the equation.. and the 911...pulls away from the TVR"
So in EVOness, in EVOmagazine, the TVR wins. Strangely EVO has to add a nonEVO criterion to pull the Porsche back. Weird.
It's clear the EVO staff are full of shopping fanatical, 911 driving, pussey footed faggotts...... no disrespect meant*.
OK so the Tuscan win's all rounds and they give it to a car who's makers still haven't put the engine in the right place! Biggest bunch of arse since the Spice Girls.
*To faggotts or pussey's..

Personally I would love to have either.
BUT, If I could only have one, (remember, my own cash) I be stupid to choose a Tuscan.
For purley pratical reasons, reliability, depreciation, cost of ownership.
I think the porsche beats the tuscan in all these areas, especially when both second hand
I still prefer the tuscan.
But......
TVR need to address the 'But' factor for the tuscan
MY 2 griffiths have been wonderful (and did win the argument) compared to a carrear 2/4, and boxters look at seriously.

Everday usesability is a major EVO quality, this is where the porche beats out the tuscan.
It has the image (Justified or not, I'm sure some of you will disagree) of being hewn form solid steel, and would have no trouble doing 50,000 miles a year, with regular servicing and will not let you down..
Of the 2 cars, I would have to say that the porsche is a lot closer to this image. And probably in reality too.
As an example, I don't think my griff would be particulary brilliant, if I was doing a hifgh mileage that I believe a carrera 2/4 would take in it's stride.
but I do low mileages (even in my company passat) so all things considered this is why I have a griff not a 911.
In the real world ( i envy those who can afford not to consider these issues), these considerations decide it. So EVO is purely given this advice based on these considerations.
I.e. the tuscan is more fun (marginally, whatever,) BUT....
It did manage to beat the opther cars, which do have a much better reliabilty image, so maybe it's no bad thing.

Something just caught my eye, had to respond. What's this about the "engine in the wrong place"? You can't be suggesting that the donkey should be in front of the driver, surely? I know the 911 position is far from ideal, but after trying the front-engined tack for a period spanning three decades Porsche politely dropped it: and went mid-engined to make Boxster. The 'S' variant then kicked the Tuscan's arse in Autocar, as I remember. A mid-engined TVR - styled by the team that created Tuscan R - now that would be something.

Does anyone really care where the engine is?
Imagine how many beta testers it would take to sort out a mid engine TVR, 'overheating, reliability, access to the engine, when it goes wrong, up go the bills?
As long as the car handles well, and above all is reliable. In this price bracket, 36 - 50 sports cars (including TVR) have to be relaiable.

The Tuscan was mentioned as getting the higest EPR rating (or whatever they call it), beating the 911 Turbo. 83% or something.
I read that they'd recently sold a chunk of EVO to AutoExpress ... wait for the Daewoo Matiz XVTi Turbo vs Yaris Sporty tests in a few months. I guess Barker 'n all have made a few bob which keeps them sweet (guess the same happened when the flogged Performance Car to Car Magazine).
On the engine location, I think you'll find that if you look at where TVR place their engines in comparison to the axles then 'front-mid' engined springs to mind. Ideal on the balance front I reckon, whether the "donkey is on front of the driver or not". Right place in the first place, not (extremely well) engineered to counter the bad placing in the first instance.

You mean...Much deep thought and conflaberry happen on the locatbold of the engimost. “Ah,” said the man “if you looky most”, which he didn’t, “I think you'll findy that where that big fat boofy car maker in Blackpool, all run down to the sea and jump in and get wet, and swimmy do and trams and all that stuff, place their motor and some, in comparimost to the axles which turns the wheels and make go.” “Then 'front-mid' engined springs to the foremost of the old grey matter. Ideal on the balance front I reckon, but, and I say this after much searchy most of the forefront of my brain.” “Whether the "donkey” is on front of the driver or not”, which tickled me, but not the donkey, going eee-oor. Right place in the first place is the thought for today, not… blue coat man to come up with ruler an all that design stuff and nonsense to counter most the bad placing of the donkey-do in the first instance. Ah yes…
quote:Pardon my questify your theorymost, but isn't the manifold running fronty through the legs - giving more room for the catspipe bendy back - not the donkey drive ?

The comment that got my attention was that the air conditioning in the Tuscan is excellent - why make that comment only about a TVR? Since when has EVO measured cars on the quality of the air it blows?
Besides the air con is not excellent - it is much better, but still not excellent.
