I had a slight hitch with the Chim last weekend, wouldn't go into gear sometimes, so I limped it home and had a word with my usual TVR specialist/dealer, which is about 30 miles away from me. They suggested I not drive it but get it trailered to them, and that probably my breakdown cover people would do that.

Unfortuanatley talking to the breakdown people, a very well known outfit that I have been with all my driving life (since 1994!), they would not trailer it more than 10 miles because it was at my home address already. I have 'roadside', 'recovery' and 'at home' cover, so if I had not limped it home but called them out immediatly they would tave trailered it where-ever I told them to if they couldn't fix it. If I drive it, and get more than 1/4 mile away from home, then the same will apply.... seems a bit daft to me, but there you go.

I had a read through the service docs, and the 'up to 10 miles' bit is included in 'roadside', 'at home' gives your 'roadside' at home, but does not give you 'recovery' at home. Hmm. Anyway they sent a bloke and the car went into gear no problem and seems to have been fixed just by his very presence... typical smile So more than likely I will drive it to the dealers anyway (and if it breaks down halfway there, I'll call the breakdown ppl out).

SO: does anyone know of a breakdown service that will trailer you car to YOUR SPECIFIED place of repair from anywhere in the UK INCLUDING your home address? I'm not very impressed with my current supplier and think it's time to check my options come renewal. Plus it will probably save me a few bob since they all seem to give discounts to new customers but not longstanding ones, which gets on my nerves immensly!

I could be wrong, but most places will have a clause saying that if you break down within a quarter mile of your house they won't recover you, and if your level of cover does cover you for this, they will only tow you home if they can't repair it.. In fact i think mine states that I can be towed anywhere in the UK if I breakdown 15miles away from home, anything under than I get towed home! I need to double check that though.. i'm with Gem motoring assist

If you breakdown near your house, just get a friend to tow you further away first.

If you have AA cover and get additional Breakdown Cover and the car is undriveable then they will take you to the garage and pay up to £500 repair costs per visit. All for around £65 per annum.

Check your bank I found out I had free cover . This can sometimes be a cheaper way of getting it . Anyway I have aa cover only needed it once when the fuel pump died in the Tuscan . Great service though

The problem with bank/credit card type covers is that they are usually just basic breakdown cover and do not include at home, recovery etc. so worth checking that or whether you can upgrade to the level you want/need for a nominal fee.

I use these guys, as it covers both me and my wife on any car. Basically you pay for the recovery up front, and then claim it back. Not used it yet however!

+1 for AutoAid. Very reasonable cost for the level of cover.

Perhaps, I am with Barclays and get `free` breakdown with account, not car specific so covers all 3 we have. Had a puncture in the Griff on a Sunday. None repairable and no available new tyre. RAC booked us into hotel for night with breakfast, bodged the tyre so we could limp there and the patrol followed us to hotel just in case, apparently we had £500 cover for hotels per night. Just a pity the hotel was in Reading!

That's twice in two years isn't it Bob ? Didn't you pull the same trick on the way to Guards Polo so you could get a few nights away in a hotel in 2009 wink
