Lake District - where to stay

Will be 'running in' the rebuilt engine when I get the car back (now probably end August beginning September) and will probably look to do this in one hit over a 3 -5 day period (around a 1000 miles or so). Will start either Norfolk or Lincolnshire and am thinking up to the Lakes for a night (maybe two), then down to Cornwall for a night (maybe two), then back to East Anglia. Am saving Scotland for after it's run-in, apparently Apple Cross on the West Coast is an absolute must.... So, anyone recommend a friendly hotel in the Lakes with stunning views and good food ?

Lodore Falls Hotel is nice just outside Keswick (walk there around the lake) good food, nice bar, small pool and leisure.

Sharrow Bay, Ulswater.

Great hotel, great food and right on the edge of Ulswater. There will be a Cerbera there on the 4th August.

What is your possible route from Lincoln to the lakes as from Lincoln to the lakes off the motorways there are some great roads and places to see. You will also drive past a couple of indies which may come in handy if things are required.

C3BER, will be picking car up in Lincolnshire when it's done/I'm on leave, and if sufficient time before having to go back to work will probably drive up to the Lakes straight from there, although haven't yet looked at route options. Probably won't make the Lakes on day one as I have to get from Norwich up to Lincolnshire then sort out the car etc so unlikely to get away before early afternoon. This would indicate an overnight somewhere then continue up to the Lakes on day two, drive around, then overnight as per the hotel suggestions above before heading in a South Westerley direction.. So, any suggestions for a non motorway route (and hotel suggestions half way) would be very much appreciated !!

We stayed at Riverside in Keswick a couple of months ago - fantastic place if you are after a modern self-catered apartment.

It does depend on how far you want to drive on your first afternoon but a good drive will get you into the lakes nice and early on the second day. Easy route up the A1 towards knaresborough and onto the A59 heading into skipton. You can stay in the skipton area at one of the travel lodge type things, I can send details if required.

Skipton on the A65 towards the lakes which crosses at junction 36 M6 turning into the A590. Junction 36 let's you go north to start your lakes tour from Penrith south towards Ulswater and so on. Keswick would be a good start of your visit as it has a car museum . It also had the only lake in the lakes, Bassenthwaite Lake.

'fraid not. It closed down at the start of the year, and was cleared out a couple of months ago. All the exhibits are now in the USA, apparently...

There is a very good mining museum there though.

Ok let's look at plan B: osprey viewing point.

Then a drive down to grasmere for gingerbread and a great drive and check out some poet and his daffodils.

Ambleside garden centre if the missus is coming and walk into town. Good parking but can and will get busy.

Lovely drive over to Tarn Hows the most beautiful place in the lakes.

I could go on and on and on and I agree with above it depends on your over night budget. What I would say is start booking your rooms as everything this year will book fast.

If you take C3BER's suggestion of...Easy route up the A1 towards knaresborough and onto the A59
I'm a chef working in a pub near Clithero, there's a nice little BnB within spitting distance, a hotel 5 minute walk.
I'd happily sort out booking you into either if needed, and you'd get your car parked within 24hr managed barrier system, if thats a worry.
As for C3BER's suggestion of where to stay .
And there's a cracking dead end twisting and bending round the back of Ulswater, once you've passed through Pooley Bridge.

Clithero also has Track v Road based there just in case things need sorting before the lakes and Cornwall.

Andy why do I get a feeling you've stayed at the Sharrow Bay. You so right about the road round the back of Ulswater. Last time we stayed we went via Patterdale but this time it will be M6 first to gain some extra time.

At the bottom of the lakes by the steam train station there is a White hotel (no name policy). I was invited to take breakfast there only to have the breakfast tea poured over my legs by a young waitress, hurt a bit. But it's a good hotel and the kippers are nice

I bet when you bought it it was cleaner than a clean thing knowing Richard. If I pop up for a visit I clean the car before hand incase richard gives me the death stare.

I stayed in a beautiful hotel called Grasmere hotel indoor pool and fantastic views, not as busy as Windermere etc. Take a rain coat for you and your car.
