Got to admit that one got me stumped. Whats the story with the tacho? is it a new one or would it be a problem using the old one?

thanks for the reply, its a new smiths tacho, i asked an auto electrician mate of my brother and he'd never heard of them either, i've used the ' W ' terminal on the alternator to set the tickover speed but can't get it to read less than 1500rpm so there's obviously something wrong somewhere, i'll probably get back in touch with the dealer and see what's up. thanks again.

Try something as simple a resistor,

I have just paid someone a fortune to get my capri cossie 24v running and that was one of the easier probs.

PROBLEM SOLVED! the settings in the rear of the tacho include 5 switches the first one is for 4,6,or 8 cylinders, so instead of having it set for 4 I changed it to 8 and its OK, now reading something like it should, i'll have to have it set with another accurate tacho to adjust mine so that it reads right, thanks to all for input.
