oh shite!!!.......the autobox has gone!!!
Discussion
i suppose it is now time to change the cortina from an auto to a manual as the bloody thing refuses to go into any gear bar 1st.
ive been advised that it might just need the bands adjusting but ultimatly the box will probably need replacing soon......so im thinking w.t.f and do it sooner rather than later.
does anyone know if the auto 2.0 engine is capable of being changed to a manual flywheel/clutch set-up as i remember someone saying that you cant convert them to manual......can anyone verify this before i just wade-in guns blazing only to find myself up a creak without a paddle?

well......obviously not many 'auto-friendly' p.h'ers!!
ive decided to rip the 2.0 pinto and auto box out and get either a 205 pinto block and 4-speed bullet box or a d.o.h.c lump with fuel injection and a 5 speed type 9 box installed as the parasitical bloodminges who call themselves 'auto-box specialists' in this area want to charge me over £600 to sort it out!! ....and as i told the nobbers,i am not willing to spunk out that amount of sponds on a c3 box for a 22 year-old motor.
next stop.....requisition of a donor car!!

cheers den, your wisdom has also been confirmed through the cortina owners website too.....just incase anyone else is going to attempt this, the only things that are diffrent are:
1.even though the trans tunnel doesnt need cutting, there isnt a ridge around the selecter opening for the inner rubber selector sleeve to go on to so it will have to be bonded to the tunnel.
2.you'll have to either source and fit a hollow metal sleeve for the clutch cable to go into at the bulkhead from a scrap manual tina or fabricate this yourself.
and finally
3.there may be a need to realign the propshaft as the auto crossmember may make the gearbox sit too high, even though it is the correct mounting for the conversion to a type 9 gearbox.
now to find a scrapper with a good 2.0/2.1 and hopefully it might have a decent type 9 with it!!!

the mt75 might fit,bit i think that would mean getting a dohc lump for it,fitting a fuel injection system and modifying the manifold for the exhaust aswell,at least if i stick with a pinto i can use the new ashley 4-branch manifold ive got hanging up in my garage and i can stick with carbs.....i like the noise a set of carbs make as even the std 2.0 twinchoke webbers sound great when they have a k+n fitted.
i'll have to see what comes up though....i did see a type9 box on ebay that was supposedly reconned when the bloke selling it got it but the guy said there was a noise when the box was connected that made it sound like either the bearings were knacked or the gearbox had straight cut gears....i dont know if i should chance it or not tbh.

**update**
ive had a reply from a member on buysell,he's going to sort out a gearbox, xmember and some other odds and sods that should help me out bigtime.....its only a 4-speed box but it will do until i source a good/recon type9 jobbie and the best bit is he's in southend next week and will be able to drop it off for me....cool!!.
i just have to make sure i keep the xmember from the auto box so i can fit the type 9 in later on without too much hassle.
now its basicly just the actual engine to get!!

*****even newer update***** (if youve been waiting then i am sorry its been so long in the coming)
the type 9 box conversion idea has been terminated after i won a perfectly functional 2000e auto gearbox and torque converter off ebay for the princely sum of £16 (£30 delivered) as i was in 2 minds wether to convert or not as the change would effect the resale value later and it was alot of work...and im a lazy bastard.....so instead of all the faffing about its a straight-forward swap and the car should be ready for the summer show season.
hopefully i will be able to get her into the buysellcortina area......the worst bits now will be :
1.the gearbox/torque converter change-over
2.valeting the car inside and out and cleaning the engine bay/lump/etc
3.trying to get to santa pod without aquiring fines and points.
hopefully her first proper outing will be to the ace cafe's classic ford meet on may 10th.
