Anyone here got an ST220 at all? We're looking at a family load lugger and have given up on the notion of an MPV now. My wife's spotted that they do an ST220 in Estate flavour and wants me to put a deposit down ASAP!!!

I've driven the hatchback version and was very impressed, although it didn't feel as fast as I thought it should, but that's probably more to do with the fact it was so civilised at speed compared to what I'm used to.

hi i know its quite late to reply and you've probably already got a car by now but i can thouroughly recommend the ST220 estate. when i worked for Jaguar i got my father one on employee discount and he loves it. says everyday it is a joy to drive and having driven through france recently it is not only quick but sounds great and looks the part. black or silver are the more restrained colours and red interior is very nice once the initial shock has worn off.

hope that has confirmed your choice or maybe its pissed you off coz you had to get an MPV in the end!!

cheers, Piers

Piers,

Haven't got it as yet, as got diverted buying a Cupra-R for myself

My wife is dead keen on the ST220 to run the sprogs in and given the competition the only things going against it are:

1. Front-wheel drive
2. The Badge

So if I stop being a snob it's just the FWD that's the issue, but when the nearest competition (as I see it) are the Passat W8 and MGZT-T 260 both of which are over £6K more I think that settles it.

Just waiting for some more reports on the new Mondeo and the 4x4 MPVish version I've heard of with occasional rear seats - hoping they Ford have something at the Motor Show...

Plus it looks 10 times better than any X Type Estate. Probably a better driver's car too.

Do you really need RWD in a family estate car? Not sure I'd want to get the back end out on a family motor IYKWIM.

Badge snobbery makes me

I'm not driving that.......it's not german....pah!

Buy the car that does the job
A) better than the others
B) cheaper than the others

As for FWd, last time I got jiggy with a Leon Cupra R I seem to remember it was dragged along by it's front wheels

The St220 is a well engineered package in all it's body forms, once you get passed the initial £ losses on a new car it becomes even better value.

but hey, it's a ford engine in the mg anyway so the money ends up the same pot in the long run

I drive a ST220 5dr hatchback. very impressed. nice package, fast enough to get a smile on ur face, smooth and refined enough on the motorway, handles very very well for such a large car almost wraps around you when pushing on. i would say its almost chuckable! fuel consumption not too bad either.

couple of mates in their snobby cars have acutally admitted to perferring the St to their German sports saloons because its the better package.

one reason why it doesn't feel fast is because it hides speed and the feeling of acceleration.

i for one is very happy with the car. i would definitely get another.

We have a Zetec S V6 estate and its brilliant, goes well, very comfy, tows very well ( a MK1 Cortina race car) you can get shed loads in it and still use the rear seats, I could recommend it highly enough, especially at 12k and only year old.

I'm looking to upgrade to an ST220 maybe early next year as Im up to 40k on ours already

But a Ford V6 is good enough for your S though...

I've had 3 V6 Mondeos since 1995. Ghia, Ghia X and the ST which has been a blast, very understated until you want it to speak volumes. Have driven it Malaga and back via Dover/Calais, superb through France and Spain and have done in excess of 130mph with two 16 foot ladders on the roof rack on the M5, loads of carrying space, and good road handling, mechanically the only problems I've had in 4 years were a replacement alternator, and I'm on the 3rd battery. Front tyres on average last 24k miles and have recently replaced the rears at 96k miles (and they were still road legal!!). Rarity seems to add a little bit of value to resale, a dealer on Saturday offerd £7k for it for his own use. The wife had a 2002 Ghia Estate which gives me confidence that the ST220 Estate will give the space required for the family. The only negative I can think of is the 0-60 which seems a fair bit slower that the older V6s. Other than that go for it especially as you are no longer restricted to Ford Racing Blue / Imperial Blue as with the ST200
