Oil for S reg Ford Mondeo 1.8

Hi,

My partners got a 140k example which hasn't been looked after terribly well. The book says use 5w 30 oil. I have a couple of questions:

1. Should synthetic or semi oil be used?
2. If mineral oil has been used for the last service, would putting synthetic in the car do any damage?
3. When she getsw the next oil change done, is it worth using synthetic oil or is the car too old to warrant this extra cost?

Id say just buy the the standard Ford 5/30, its a semi synthetic.
