Just trying to replace a worn drive belt on my 2002 1.6 Focus wih the aid of a haynes manual. However the belt layout diagram is different on the car to the manual. The belt on my car was goes around the alternator, power steering, water pump and crankshaft pulleys, but the maunal suggests it goes around a belt tensioner pulley. As this pulley doesnt seem to exist I am a bit stuck as I don't know how to slacken the belt to remove it.

The haynes manual suggests it is a simple enough task, and im sure it would be if this extra pulley was there.

As you can probably tell, I haven't replaced a drive belt before, so any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks
Will

I was under the impression that the facelift Focus 1.6 Zetec doesn't have a Zetec engine under the bonnet. What does it say on the cam cover?

Hi,

Cam cover says 'Zetec SE'.

It is one of the early facelift models, is in fact on a 51 plate but registered in Feb 2002. So perhaps it has an older engine in it?

Just checked the previous haynes manual for the early focus models and the precedure is stated as the same.

Had a quick look and the belt goes round 7 pulleys.

Alternator and aircon at the front, down to the crankshaft, up to a plastic pulley which it runs round reversed (could be water pump) down to the back (also potential water pump) up to power steering pump and forward to the alternator again with what looks like a tensioner halfway along.

Sorry I haven't got the time for a full investigation but HTH.

You have just described exactly what I was expecting to find (except I don't have air-con, so no pulley for that).
However mine just goes alternator, down to crankshaft, along to power steering, around to water pump and then back to alternator. I just don't seem to have this extra pulley which is the belt tensioner. And without the belt tensioner pulley, I'm unsure of how to slacken it off.

confused

Edit to say, thanks for looking at yours.

According to Ford you could have a stretchy belt fitted which is cut off and then the new one stretched back on(The instructions and neccessary tools are in the kit when you buy it from Ford),if it is because of a noise(Squeaking) you are changing it presuming the belt is worn it could easily be the water pump is noisy or the antifreeze content is too low thereby causing the waterpump bearing to not be correctly lubricated.

Hi Jon,

Thanks for that, it sounds like that might be what I'v got, it would certainly explain the lack of belt tensioner. Is that unusual?

If its not too cheeky to ask, any chance you could give me a part number and maybe a price.

Thanks for your help.
