My '98 escort gti failed an mot because of a noisy rear wheel bearing. I have removed one of the old ones and found the assembly is held together by a multy layered nut encased in a cage. I have never come across this before only having replaced the 'normal' castle nut and split pin type. Can anyone give me advice on reassembly and how, without a split pin, the retaining nut stays in place.

The pack nut is a lock nut, it should only be used once and then discarded as it's design can strip the threads on the spindle.

The bearings aren't set in a conventional manner, you simply torque the nut up to the specified settings and the jobs done.

Thank you Brian, without a repair manual I couldn't be sure if it had been assembled correctly previously.
