My GF's Puma 1.7 is coming up to 10 years old and we thought we'd find out how much the cam belt was going to cost us since we'd previously heard it was required at 100,000miles or 10 years. However, when we asked Ford for a quote, they said it should be done at 60,000 miles on the 1.7.

Does anyone have any ideas about when their Puma cam belt was changed or know the schedule?

Thanks in advance.

The 1.7 should be done at 80,000 miles or 5 years. I believe Ford changed the interval at some point and the interval quoted within the owners handbook should be ignored. More info here http://www.pumapeople.com/index.php?showtopic=1389...

ETA: I recently had mine done and it should of cost me £248 from a Ford main dealer but they cocked up the quote and I only ended up paying £185 hehe its 6 year old and done 48,000.

Did mine this year (late) on 98-R plate 1.7. Car had done 75K.... and I knew I was overdue and running the gauntlet a bit hehe...

Make sure you get the Full Ford kit with the new tensioner/stretch bolt in it. If you change the belt alone (with a spurious part from a Motor Factors), you might as well not have bothered in the first place.

Make sure whoever is involved is fully conversant with setting and holding the VCT mechanism whilst undertaking the belt change. A Fraud garage is probably the safest option (frown).

Edited for spelling.... Spelt Ford incorrectly hehe

Thats excellent advice.

You would be amazed how many garages know nothing about the locking tool needed.

If you are anywhere near Brum pumabulid have a good reputation http://www.pumabuild.co.uk/serv_puma.htm

Thanks to you all for those replies. I'll weigh it all up and advise the GF of your comments. Brum is a fair old jaunt to get the belt replaced so it looks like we might have to get our local Ford garage to do it after all.

Almost forgot - Get the auxiliary belt belt done at the same time (as it has to come off to do the Cam Belt), saves on labour cost - Extra twenty quid for the aux belt, and peace of mind.

As you're in the south east, Tremona garage in Southampton are recommended by the Pumapeople massive. Should cost £250 with the aux belt changed at the same time.

Ive seen these go at the 80k mark so worth getting it done asap, although they not a bad job to do and the locking tool kit for the cams and crank can be bought for less than a tenner from a motor factor (good old ford same tool for all zetecs and derv as well) so if your mechanically minded at all get yourself a haynes manual and set aside a day and do it yourself. When you buy the belt kit though it doesnt come with the hydraulic tensioner unit, only the wheel it presses against to take up the slack but its worth changing as any leak that develops can cause the belt to slacken. Hope this helps
