The truck has had this since I bought it in November 06, its a Ranger Thunder XLT 2.5TD I ordered a new Crank pulley as could not see what else would cause such a wobble, finally got round to fitting it. Once I got the old one off I noticed it had a crack right down to the pulley flange coming from the back of the keyway?

I popped a new front seal on reassembled with the brand new pulley, fired it up, and I still have a wobble on the crank pulley, not as quite as bad but still well noticeable?

The pulleys are dampeners as well and the belt vee part is bonded on with rubber, but the whole pulley wobbles you can see the centre part moving as well.

Could the nose of the crank be bent? the pulley slide on fine.

Could the key way be messed up and something be stuck at the back of the pulley?

To be honest I saw nothing in the strip down, I even turned the engine over to make sure the key was at 12.00 just in case.

The old pulley apart for the crack looks fine, no other damage?

Could all the pulleys suffer some run out and its just a characteristic of these engines?

Anyone ever heard of anything like this before, I have read that Mazda engines have suffered Crank problems in the past but not this engine.

Cheers

Joe

Does the crank pulley slip right on or did you have to tap it on?

It's not uncommon for wear to develop on the end of the crank making the pulley a loose fit, front main seals will actually wear a groove over time. There is probably a runout tolerance especially as the pulley is also a dampener.

Mmm, seal had worn a little groove , the crack run straight through it at 90 degrees.
Pulley went on fine needed a wiggle and tap to get it passed the seal.
When home fully I gave the pulley a turn to check the keyway, no play.

The pulley I would say is a tight fit.
This is also supposed to be a recon engine in Jan 06, done 15, miles since.

Really weird how the old one cracked I will take a couple of pictures, and post them.

Cheers

Well here's the pictures,

The new installed pulley has about 2mm run out back and forth, and 1mm on the outside diameter of the pulley.

Lots of theories, one saying incorrect keyway installed by engine builders.

Should I pull all this down again? it did go what felt like right home when it was installed.

I have just never seen anything like this before, very weird.
