I cannot take it any longer and I NEED to get hold of a MK1 Escort to restore and go rallying in it

So oh Lords of Ford based goodness I have a few questions that you might be able to help me with.

Firstly, anything thats not going to have a stupid price tag on it is going to be totally rotten, when looking at potential projects at which point does the tin worm turn the car from salvageble to scrap? Which parts need to be at least in semi ok nick before I walk away?

I am not really interested in putting a modern engine in the car but definatly something big. How hard is it to put a big V8 in an escort?

Finally before I begin my long and painful quest to find my project are there any places I should look first. I am not really looking to spend a fortune on a total wreck just because its a mk1 escort but I am willing to pay a fair price for something which without some attention is just going to be crushed. So any tips on finding one for a reasonable amount would be appreciated.

Only thing is i can add is that putting a V8 in a Escort isn't ideal for a rally car, best sticking to a Pinto or coverting to N/A Zetec or Cossie.

In what class of rallying you want participate in?
Try West Wales Rally Spares as they are MK1/2 Escort specialists.
They might be able to put you on to someone with a mk1 escort.
www.westwalesrallyspares.co.uk/

Otherwise try Classic Ford Mag.

Cheers for that will drop them a line.

Have checked all the usual suspects PPC, Classic Ford, Fast Ford etc...

I am not really looking to compete just a track toy and something that can take a bit of forest rallying.

Been sitting down and having a hard think today and realise as has been said a huge engine is fine for straight lines but I want something a bit more refined. A mate had the idea of impretza running gear and maybe the engine. As with all things it will be a grand design that might not be possible. First lets get hold of a decent shell and then get the old measuring tapes and set squares to see if the scoob gear will fit.

Have noticed that there are quite a few XR4is and Xr4x4s that are around for not alot of cash. Are they a bit lacking in the thrills dept?

My Ford Escort has got a 2.3 litre pinto engine producing 300 bhp.
It is only used for tarmac rallying and due to the rules it has got to use
the original spec when it was built. I bought the car for £35k and is now
work £50k plus.
Join a local motor club, they will know people with Escort mk2's.
Don't even bother with a Subaru, XR4X4 engines as that will give you
more hassle. Keep the car to its original concept rear wheel drive.
Take up rallying and enter into tarmac stage rallies, they cost the same
as a track day would but you will have much more fun.

The 2.3 Pinto simular to the Cortina 2000E engine which has been bored out?

If you keep to RWD have you replaced the original Live Axel with some kind of LSD? I would of thought that is needed for any kind of motor sport.
