Fitting a Roll Cage and buckets to a puma..
Discussion
Fitting a cage to any car is not an easy task, even if you have good mechanical skills and can weld. The easy bit is stripping out the seats, carpets, trim and any other useless bits and pieces that can save you weight(I presume you are using this competitevely, otherwise a full rip out will not be neccessary if you are using it for fast road/track days and you want to keep some comforts). A Roll Centre Cage or a Safety Devices Cage are good and reasonably priced. This should be bolted together inside the car, but do not bolt to the floor pan at this point. With a felt pen or similar, with the cage in the optimum position(not fowling B post, A pillars, roof ect) draw around the cage feet onto the floor. You may find that an alement of the foot is not touching the floor pan at all. To overcome this and to strengthen the area of the floor pan around the feet, some metal plates at least twice the area of the cage feet and ideally 3-5mm thick should be mig welded to the body shell. After these are in place, the cage feet can be positioned and bolted through the new plates and bodyshell. Large square washers should be used on the under side of the car when bolting up. Competition seats should be secured on purpose built sub-frames which can be bought from Demon Tweeks and the likes. Similar principles apply, make sure the area is flat and go overboard with bolt and washer size, particularly on the underside of the car.
A good roll cage will cost between £350:00 and £550:00 depending upon Spec, 6 point cheapest to multipoint ££££`s. Expect to pay similar for fitting.
Seat sub frames will cost approx £50:00
Have fun.
