Hi Guys,

The wife's 53 plate 1.6 Zetec Focus has developed a couple of annoying electrical faults, which may or may not be related.

The first problem is that the drivers electric window fails to operate. Its not the switch,( tested and its fine) and its not the fuses ( all fuses intact) , aha must be the motor I say. However, when the switch is operated no current whatsoever flows to the motor, nada, nil, buggar all, not a twitch on the multimeter..how can this happen? Earths perhaps?

Second problem is that, again on the drivers side, when the sidelights are on and the footbrake is operated the drivers rear sidelight goes out , the two remaining brake lights and the nearside rear sidelight work as intended. Is this Fords way of telling me I need a new bulb or something more complex?

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers,

Tony

First problem I would take it back to the dealer, get them to look - and then contact Ford customer services in Glasgow, should be able to get a part contribution (assuming FFSH).

Second problem - try cleaning the contacts maybe?

Car is just 2 months out of warranty and I did the last 24k service (although used genuine Ford Parts) as the local Ford garage is not the best, except for charging !!

Cheers,

Tony

Give it a go anyway, I've had 75% contributions before even though the car was a couple of months out of warranty.

Sounds like you have an earth point problem , if the tail light is going out when you brake ,its because its getting to ground . multimeter set to continuity and in you go!

Check cabling going from bulkhead through door, if it's a plug check for corrosion, if it's through that springy black plastic tube check for breakages in the wires.
as for the rear lights it sounds like an earthing problem or bad connection to that light cluster, remove the connector plug and clean the spade connectors.

Hi Guys,

Replaced bulb in rear light and it now works fine( wished I understood why though). I stripped the door down again and it looks like the motor for the window system is bust, the wiring, switches etc all checked out ok......

Any tips on replacing the window motor or perhaps I should invest in a Haynes manual?

Cheers,

Tony

Tony,

Instead of the Haynes, I would look on eBay for the TIS CD - it's Fords own how-to system - and is very helpful

I would offer to send you a copy of mine, but I don't know where it is laugh
