Focus 2.0 Ghia....Petrol vs Diesel
Discussion
Guys,
I am considering the purchase of an '06 Plate, 5 door Focus Ghia. I test drove the 1.6 Petrol which was very nice for a 1.6, but I want something with a bit more grunt.
What I can't decide is whether to go for 2.0 litre petrol or diesel. I do mainly motorway driving, but when the opportunity presents itself, I do enjoy blasting down country roads.
Obviously the diesel torque on the motorway is nice, but a 2.0L petrol isn't going to be shy either, especially in a car of this size. Fuel economy is obviously better in the diesel, but they cost more to buy and diesel is more expensive, so I'm not entirely sold on the economy argument.
Any thoughts?

The in-gear acceleration in a 2.0 deisel is pretty impressive, but when you really want it to go there isnt much more. Stock v stock I think the petrol version would be quicker in a race, although youd have to really thrash it. They are so easy to drive though. you rarely get caught in the wrong gear.
Also, you can chip the deisel and get very good gains from it, up to about 180bhp (RICA), in which case it will piss ALL over the petrol version. (probably going to get mine done at some point). You woudl most definately need one with traction control though if you wanted to do this.
In terms of economy there is quite a difference. Provided you stick to the speed limits you can get 50 plus pretty easily. general running about with a bit of stop start, overtaking here and there etc seems to be around 45.
The deisel may cost more to buy, but they hold onto thaqt extra cost in the resale value.
If you can stump up enough cash to get a 2.0 tdci then get one, otherwise get then petrol version. The performance of the 1.8 and 1.6 tdcis will probably dissappoint you.
Saying that, you could always buy and chip a 1.8tdci and it will be around the same performance as the 2.0 tdci. Ive seen virtually new 1.8 tdcis go for silly money as they seem no longer desirable, given the more ecomonimcal 1.6 and gruntier 2.0 options.
