focus 2,0 zetec tuning
Discussion
hi,
i just had my 2.0 focus superchipped with bluefin, and had an induction kit fitted, and saw the bhp jump from 132 to 152 on a rolling road. however, ive got the bug now, and i would really appreciate some advice on the next step for tuning and the expected gains for what ill fork out. i was thinking of fitting a wider throttle body, and also the possibility of adding an ST170 exhaust manifold..... any thoughts? Also, if I get the ST170 manifold fitted, would the de-cat pipe be a wise move too??
would love some advice..

Best bet would be to join up at www.ffoc.co.uk, lots of info on there.

What sort of difference did the 20 bhp make, keen to add a fee horses to mine, i'm after more overtaking ability more than anything, what did you pay for the Bluefin?
Chris
There are limited options for normally aspirated engines. Chipping is probably the main one. everything else costs a lot of money and is likely to render your car very expensive to insure, and for not a huge amount of gain.
20bhp from a chip and induction kit is a good result. Personally Id stick at that, and buy something faster next time.

I thought about this option (Bluefin & induction) & wished now i'd have gone for it now! 20 bhp is a good increase.
Chris - Bluefin is £299 inc vat & delivery
Mike
20bhp from Bluefin and an induction kit is pretty good going as Superchips advertise a 13bhp gain for the Bluefin, in my experience induction kits on zetecs dont really give any true power gains - more an improved throttle response.
St manifold is a good way to move forward now and has well documented and proven power gains, decat isn't a nescessity but will free up a fair few more ponies. Bare in mind that if you fit the ST manifold you will also hae to change your power steering pipe as the stock one on a 2.0L runs too close and you'll boil the fluid!
As stated get yourself signed up on www.ffoc.co.uk - theres loads of information on there for extracting the most from your zetec!

Chris - the extra bhp has made a big difference - it sounds really excellent and pulls much harder than before whilst in 2nd and 3rd. The best comes when in 4th and just cruising - more low down torque has meant less need of changing gears.

The best 'sensible' power mod, i.e. not turboing or supercharging is a 4 trumpet throttle body conversion. Costs around £1900-£2100, BUT, there's no messing around, on a std 132bhp 2.0 zetec engine 200bhp has been seen on the rollers with no other mods. Off the top of my head i think jenvey do a 190bhp set, but ford enthusiasts magazines or sites will confirm who the 200bhp people are (were in a recent issue of fast ford or performance ford, can't find it now).
You get no turbo lag, instant, noisy, acceleration.
This setup is rumoured to be quite popular with westy/caterham/seven owners doing rebuilds, zetec reliability, type-r power.

As the others have said, you can be quite limited with the engine, especially with the mods you've already done.
Bigger tuning could come in the form of a turbo or supercharger conversion, but that would depend how far you wanted to go.
Throttle bodies are also an excellent option.
But, you're pretty restricted because of the bluefin. If you had added an exhaust and induction kit but then wanted to do a lot more work, you would have been better off going for something like a remap or unichip. Your engine would then be able to be mapped each time or in total, for every modification made and therefore you'd see far greater results and effect. The bluefin is designed to save your standard settings and then change them to the greater ones on its system, but if you add more mods afterwards, the bluefin doesn't take into account these changes.
As a previous Focus owner, definately check out www.ffoc.co.uk as the others have said and its worth paying to join up as a member.
Also check out www.powerengineering.co.uk Another great site/company who specialise in Fords and other brands and who have done previous 2.0 turbo conversions and ST170 Supercharger conversions.
