Anyone know anything about Ford electrics?

Got some genuine front fogs for my Mk2 low-spec Mundano. The wiring was already in place so just needed a switch and the lights themselves (or so I thought) which I have acquired through a certain online auction site. The lights work fine wired directly to a battery however when fitted to the car, they come on just long enough to walk round the front to have a look before they blow (bizarrely) the engine management fuse! If I only have one or the other wired up it works fine?

Now I can do mechanical things but electrics me up and am wondering, somewhat hopefully, if I'm missing a relay or something equally simple?

Any assistance will be very much appreciated. Won't be here for a little while as I'm off (on foot) to buy some fuses but will log in as soon as I get back.

Many thanks, Darren.

The fog lamps would most assuredly need to be run through a relay. There is also the possibility that the fog lamp circuit may need to be configured (turned on) by a Ford dealer using WDS to get them to work correctly if you put the relay in its proper socket. Other wise the fog lamp socket/relay may not be energized by the module that controls the them.

Ah, sounds expensive. It would seem that my hopes of a simple fix may have been dashed then

As I only really wanted them to look better than the crappy plastic blanks I have already I might settle for a pair of posh dummies!

Cheers for that

this cars too early for CAN BUS so no need to get a dealer involved - why not just get your local auto electrician to sort it out for you

Too late telling me you were joking now!! rotate

Seriously now, it's No.30 in the fusebox below the glove compartment, a 7.5a one which the manual leads me to believe is the engine management system. When it blows it also kills the headlights (sidelights ok) and the rev counter amongst other things.

Many thanks (in hopeful anticipation)

Sounds like the wiring is not going thro' the correct route! Try rewiring completely (live wire from battery via relay, source wire from sidelight supply via switch) or just fit fogs and don't wire them! Still look better than plastic blanks!

On my Mk 1 Mondeo which is not too different from the Mk 2 with regard to wiring, there is no need for a relay to be installed, although the size of the fuse may be different to allow for the extra current required.

I installed only the lights and the switch and panel light and had no problems (and maybe changed the fuse size, can't remember).

Did wonder, but don't want to put in a bigger fuse in case something more serious is amiss and I end up frying my ECU because the fuse didn't blow!

After examining the wiring diagram in the Haynes Manual, it appears that the engine management fuse is (somehow) part of the circuit for the front fogs. However beyond that it made little or no sense to me so gave no clue whatsoever as to what the problem could be

At least they make my bumper look nice if nothing else
