Apart from changing the car or the engine obviously! hehe

I have a 2005 Fiesta Ghia with the 1.4 16v Duratec engine and just wondered what are the best engine mods (preferably for minimal money), that would give me a bit of an increase in power?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks.

waste of time and money, in all honesty. the increase in your insurance premium (assuming you want to remain insured) and the outlay of doing so far outways the extra 8 bhp or so you may get.

There really isnt a huge amount you can do to normally aspirated engines, such as yours. Dont beleive any of your mates who say that they fitted <name of some wonder device they brought of ebay> and it knocked an entire second off their 0-60 time. Its all bollox, they are just trying to fool themslves into believing they got value for money.

For a "worth while" hike in power you woudl need to do one of the following:

1) fit a turbo charger
2) fit a supercharger
3) fit a nitrous kit
4) replace exhaust, induction kit, race cams, gas flowed head, ecu remap / chip

Nitrous is the cheapest to install but expensive to run long term is the most likely one to kill your engine in no time. In truth, any of the above will cost you many 1000's. The most cost effective and least troublesome way for you to get more power is to sell your car and buy something that is faster from the outset.

Best to start with the basics such as getting the air into the engine and the exhaust gases out as fast as possible, i.e. Induction Kit, Performance Exhaust. Another option is the Superchip's Bluefin, allows you to modify the map settings for the engine whilst been able to revert back to factory settings for the warrenty. Just remember anything you do will most likily void the manufacturers warrenty.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for the massive gains that you would only achieve with turbos etc. It was just basic modifications that might sharpen up thigs like the throttle response, airflow etc.

But do you think I will need a rear wing to give added downforce?

Joking

You might be able to get about 10bhp if you're lucky with a chip, decent exhaust (not a max power baked bean can jobby that just makes farting noises) and freer flowing air filter. This would take you up to nudging 90bhp and may well pick up a bit better.

Other than that, stick a turbo on it!!

Induction, exhaust, blu fin best part of a 1000 quid? Youll get another 8bhp if you are lucky (despite claims) and the difference wont be that noticeble. You'll slowly pull away racing against another standard fiesta, but you'll still get your arse kicked by the 1.8s and above, and most desiels on the road.
seriously dude, save your money and put it towards your next car

Maybe thats the best thing. Got another 4 years or so on this car anyway. Once its paid off (or nearly paid off) looking to maybe get a decent older car.

Have a look at the specs to see if the throttle body and MAF unit from the 1.6 is bigger and can be fitted, this will give more airflow.
