Hi All

I have an S reg 5Door Mondeo.....that over the last year has developed a knocking/rattle from the nearside rear.

Have taken spare wheel out and it is still there.
It can happen at any speed but is intermittent.

Have had a quick look around the rear wheel and can not see anything obvious and it has not effected the MOT.

Any thoughts pls as now getting on my nerves?

Cheers
B

Does it knock when you go over bumps or rough ground. If so it could be worn suspension mounts (Won't fail the MOT on that, well mine didn't)

I hate it when you get an annoying unidentified noise that that drives you up the wall.

Good luck on hunting it down.

Check the rear stabilizer bar bushings and mounts. The Jag X-Type which shares the platform have an issue with these for some model years. The bushings are glued down at the factory but are slightly undersized and can break loose. The fix is to install an updated bushing in the same mount and re-glue it with a Loctie gel super glue (but the name eludes me at the moment). I have a tube of the glue at work and can supply it if need be.

This repair is covered by a technical service bulletin at Jaguar, not sure about Ford in the U.K.

When you say 5 door do you mean an estate? If so pull down on the exhaust where it forms an inverted U shape as it goes over the subframe and see if that knocks. One of your exhaust mounts may have stretched.

Its a Hatch back....recently had a new Cat on the exhaust...but will check if still need to on a Hatch back...what ever it is...does not sound an easy fix with the advice so far

The exhaust hangers are easy to fix but the real bugger is when the system gets disturbed the alignment of all the exhaust parts can go tits up and clearance is very tight. Easy to check though by grabbing and pulling the exhaust up and down and if it knocks take it back and get them to sort it out.

If anything knocks rather than rattles it should be something fairly easily identifiable either by you or a garage with a ramp.
